According to the Gazette the Montreal provision market was w.ithout any ~pecial featureon Monday. There was a fair demand for all lines,and there wae e good trade doing for the season with no change in prices worthy of particular mention, We quote: Canadian pork, in barrels, $16) to $16.50; pure Canrdian lard, in paile, 8 l-4c to 8 1-2c per pound, aod compound refined at 5cto5 1-2 per pound. Hams, 101-2¢ to13c ,and bacon 10c to 13c per pound.

There was no material change in the Chicago provision market, prices being abont steady all round. Pork closed $7.57 1-2 October, $7.67 1-2 December, $8.85 January, Lard, $4.65 October, $4.7¢ December, 480 January. Short ribs, £5.20 October, $4.60 December, $4.62 1-2 January.

[here was a weaker feeling in the Liverpool provision market for lard and short cut light bacon, and prices declined 3d to 6d, bat long cut heavy bacon ad- vanced 6d. Pork, 50; lard, 258 5d; boneless long cut heavy bacon, 3!s 6d; lovg cut light, 30s 6d; short cut light, 30. 6d; and tallow, 20e 6d.

Cash quotations closed at Chicago on provisions: Mess pork, $7.65 to $7.70; lard, $4.75} to $4 753; ribs, $5 05 to $5.30; shoulders, 45 to 43c; short clear sides, $5 25 to $5.35.

Cheese and Butter Dull—Lower Pri- ces for the Boat Offerings.

In Montreal, according to the Gazette of Tuesday, cheese continues easy in tone, and if demand holds offand sellera coo-~ tinue to consent to decline, the bottom may not bein sight by any means. The chief businesson spot on Monday consitted of about 8,000 Quebec cheese offered at the wharf, and as ao evidence as the market is lower they sold from 8} v0 9c, the ontside only being taade in one or two exceptional cases, the ruling being 8{jc, which is a de- cline ofanl-8to‘}c op prices paid on similar cheese » week avo. Sir.—At the last meeting of the Fruit Growers Association, when choosing the varieties of apples to be sent to England by the next cold storage steamer, there was some discussion astc whetber the “Wealiby Apple” was suitable for the market there. This is rather an important question, as that apple grows to great per~ fection on this Island,is a very early and profuse bearer, and is now grown by us toa very considerable extent. Senstor Ferguson s:emed to be of opinions that ihe ‘*Wealthy” was not very desirable for the shipment, I do not wish to make this a long letter, so will only quote from the annual report of the Pomoiogical ard Fruit Growing Society of Quebec,in the paper read by Mr. R. W Shepperd of } Como who bas been for years president cf the society and isa large grower and exporter of apples to the old country. He says : “for exportation to Kayland, the Weal: hy has proved quite as profitable as Fameuse, and is as much appreciated there because it retains ite flavour better when it reaches the other side.” Itbink comment is needless, We all know the bigh position the Fameuse takes, and I hope the shipment of apples we sre sending this autumn will include a good proportion of Wealthy’s,

A GOOD MAN GONE.

There died at his residence Head of Hillsboro on September 26th, after a shoit illness, Donald Jumes McDonald, in the 39:h year of hie age. Mr. McDonald was avery honorable mau, a good neighbor and a kiud frieud, and was held in high esteem by his numerous friends and ac- quaintances, as was evidenced by the large concourse of people who came tu pay their last tribute of respect toa worthy man. His remains were conveyed tc S:. Andrews Church where a Solemn Requiem mass was celebrated by the pastor,Mgr.McDoa- ald,who was assisted by Rev’s Ignatius Mc- Donaidand A. McAul«y, after which bis remains were quie'ly born: to the cemeie'y near by, where the just sad rites were performed and the remains of a good man and worthy citizen committed to dust.

Market Weak With Prices on the Down Grade.

Union Srock Yaxps, October 11.— The estimated receipts of hogs were 23,- 000. The official report of yesterday was 22,528,0f which 5225 were shipped and 4184 left over. Estimates to-morrow, 32,900. Market weak aed gererally 10c lower than yesterday morning.

The quotations to-pay were: Light mixed, $3.40 to $3.80 mixed packing, $3.- 45 to $3.85 ;beavy shipping, $3.35 ; to $3.85 ; rough grades, $3.35 to 2.45.
