Another Wonder.

Keely, of motor fame, has a rival. A Mr. Garret, of Pittsburg, claims to have invented a steam gun, which puts anything in the motor line completely in the shade. His description of it is as follows :—“The loss in the opera- tion of evgines is 90 per cent. Steam is expanded 1,800 times, while super- heated steam, what is known eas blue gas, is steam expanded 7,500 times. Now superheated steam is the most gigantic force known to civilization. It bursts a boiler like a soap-bubble. Now, my plan is to have a cannon made, either six inches or six feet in thickness. On the top will be placed a massive tank, capable of holding water atimmense presure, or at least 1,000 pounds to the square inch, At the muzzle of the gun wil! be placed a wheel containing buckets like a turbine wheel. Under the cannon I will have a blast furnace which will keep the can- non in a white heat. Turn ona little water into the gun, a moment more it will be generated into superheated steam, and the force will strike the wheel and drive it with frighttul velo city. Iwill stake my life against $1 that it will work. One test case wiil locate principle. You have no dead centres to overcome. In _ steam- engines one-half of the raise of the piston head is your leverage These conditions are, therefore, arbitr- ary By my application you can have ali the leverage you want. I can reverse the motion ofthe wheel by simply turning the buckets. Why. it’s simplicity simplified. If i make thous- ands, I will give one- half to the holders of this certificate I issue.” This seems quite simple, but the difficulty which Mr, Garret has yet to overcome is the securing of enough stockholders to make his scheme pay. In that respect Keely has had the advantage of being first in the field.

A Boston physician was called out of

asound slumber the other night to answer the telephone.

‘Hello! what is it?’ he asked, little pleased at the idea of leaving his com. fortable bed.

‘Baby is crying, doctor; what shall ldo?" came across the wires,

“Ob! perbaps it’s a pin,” suggested the doctor, recognizing the voice of a young mother, one of his patients.

“No,” came the reply, “I’m sure it can’t be that.”

‘Perhaps he has the colic,” returned the doctor, with well-simulated _soli- citude.

“No, I don’t think so,” replied the anxious mother; “he doesn’t act that way.”

“Then perhaps he’s hungry,” said the doctor, as a last resort.

“Oh! Dil see,” came across the wires; then all was still. The doctor went back to bed, and was soon asleep aguin. About half an hour afterwards, he was

agein awakened by the violent ringing

his telephone bell. Jumping out of bed, and placing the receiver to his ear, he was cheered. by the following mes- gage:

“You were right doctor; baby was hungry.”

The Worst Scared of the Two.

Mrs. Peterbv is probably one of the homeliest women in the State of Texas, and ber husband very often takes occa- sion to remind her of it.

“TI got such ascare just now,” said Mrs. Peterby a few days ago.

“ What scared you my dear ?”

“I was in the kitchen just now when, all at once, a hideons looking tramp stack hishead inthe window. Oh, I never was so scared in all my bors days.”
