Then Jimmy Skunk with his scent gun, and Prickly Porky the Porcupine with his thousand little spears, had kept Buster up in that tree for ever so long. He who had. bragged that every one was afraid of hlm hadn't dared come down xvhiib either of those two were at the loot oi that tree. Ol course he had lost more lace-

All this was bad enough but now he was making matters worse, much worse. He was a scared Bear. Yes sir, he was n scared Bear and showing it. l-le was running away lrom a light. He was losing a race and more lace at the same time. He was running lrom Flathoms the Moose, the “Mighty One" ol the Green Forest. Right then Buster didn't care who saw hlm or what they thought. All he thought about or cared about was getting to e, tree big enough lor hlm to climb out ol reach ol the Mighty One. Peter Rabbit racing lor the dear Old Brlar- patch with Reddy Fox at his heels never was more scared, or more anxious to reach the lrlendly hrairs, than was Buster Bear to reach that tree. Would he be able to? What would happen ll he didn't? Would he turn and light? Il he did what a light that would be! That is it would be ll all the light wasn't knocked out ol Buster at the start,

They really didn't know. Buster Bear was at the time a bully and a hoaster, and he would eat any of them he could catch. but without hlm the Green Forest wouldn't be the same. He had scared most ol them so often it was lun now to see hlm as badly scored as ever he had scared any of them. But they were not sure that they wanted anything ‘worse to happen to him.

Nothing did. He reached the tree and the way he went up it would have been a credit to Happy Jack Squirrel or any other ol the Squirrel cousins. Yes, sir, it would so.. It didn't seem possible that anyone so big and clumsy could climb a tree so last. He was none too soon. Now as he scram- bled much higher than there was any need ol going Flathorns was snorting and Krlmting at the loot ol the tree; rearlngﬁi-p on his long hind legs as ll he meant to try to climb; clashing his great ant- lers against the trunk ol the tree; blowing fiercely, and daring Bus- ter to come down and light.

As it happened. the six-club contract was perfectly sound, but that was more a matter ol luck than good bidding! Nothing that North heard told him that South could "lill" the diamond suit. South would have bid the same way with King ol spades instead oi the King cl diamonds, and thus there might easily have been e diamond and a spade loser.

West opened his fourth-highest heart. The ace won, and South immediately decided to establish the diamond suit lor spade discards. Normally, this might have been a good decision. because it is usually correct technique to set up a long side suit, rather than attempt to rull losers (spades in this case). So South drew three rounds ol trumps, then cashed the diamond king and led the jack.

Wests lailure to loliow suit was a shock to the deciarer, who now was in a hopeless position. It would take two rulls to drive out East's queen and nine oi diamonds, and dummy was a bit short o! entries! South had to lose all three o! his Spadesl

It would have been considerably more logical to lead the spade jack at the second trick! Then, even ll East won and returned a trump, declarer could easily win in his own hand, null a spade. lead to the diamond rig and ruﬂ his lest spade, then cash the heart king and rull a heart. Then it would be time to draw trumps!
