Alexondra Notes.

One of our good neighbors of Alexandra found a parcel near his residence recently, and upon examination it proved to be brown sugar, containing strychnine. Re- flection has been cast upon his next neigh- bor. Nothing should be left undone to discover the guilty party.

Two of our enterprising farmers, Messrs. Benjamin and Wallace Wood, have char- tered a schooner to load produce for foreign markets. We wish them every success.

The commodious dwelling house of Mr. James Jones is nearing completion, and re- flects great credit on the builder, Mr. John Jones, of Fall River, Mass.

Next comes the handsome and neatly ecoustructed cottage of Mr. Lemuel Wood. It has been erected ou a beautiful situation, and the workmanship is in every way first class, and shows that the builder, Mr Theo. Brehaut, thoroughly understands his business

—Comparing the running expenses of the Grand Trunk and English railroads, Sir Henry Tyler, in his address to the Grand Trunk shareholders, made the state- ment that the wages of mechanics in Cana- da were 33 per cent. higher than in Eng- land, and the cost of materials from 24 to 72 per cent. higher. Outside of these two items, which are closely allied to their causes, the charges of the Canadian line compare favorably with those in Great Britain.

—While the German court was in mourn- ing for the late Emperor Frederick, his own son, the present Emperor, went off ona jollification tour among the other courts of Europe. It is not surprising that some comment was made on this, and other mat- ters connected with the memory of the late Emperor. This has excited the wrath of Emperor William, and he has according ordered that the press shall make no fur- ther reference to his father’s name or his family affairs. A cat, it is said, may look upon a king, but the German people, it ap- pears, are to be blind to the goings on of their Emperor.

-The Cunarders are doing a smashing business of late. Two collisions in one day, each-side of the Atlantic, would seem to be crowding matters. The extra- ordinary way in which one-third of a steam- ship was cut off by one of the Cunarders, ind sent afloat on its own account, while the other two-thirds was anchored with cargo all right, indicates great proficiency in this sort of thing onthe part of the Cunarder, or wonderful vitality in the severed ship.
