Cortez took horses with him to assis‘ in the conquest of Mexico, as did Pizarro in bis conquest of Peru. The natives were greatly affrighted when they bebeld these strange animals. At first they suppored that the man aod the horse were one complete creature, something like the ceutaur of which we read in éncient fable. Aad when they saw the rider dismount and disengage himself from his steed,their amazement knew no bounds.

In time, the savages learned that the horse was an animal that had been sub- dued by raan, and that it was a separate creaiure; but they long dreaded the horse of the Spaniards as a beast of prey. And when the horses escaped frem their masters, and made their way into the freedom of the forest, as they did after a space, the natives avoided them as something to be shunned. The quarrel- ing Spaniards neglected their steeds, which soon found homes on the plains of Mexico, South America, and the un- explorers interior of North America. From these escaped animals have sprung the ‘7ild horses of America. The mus- tang, as the native horse of the North American continent as usually called,is generally of a bright chesnut color. The horses marked with odd colors and — are called “pinto,” or ‘‘painted,” by the Mexicans, and “calico,” by the Americans. The mustang is smaller than the domesticated American horse; for we must remember that the large horses now found in our stables are the direct descendants of later importations from Europe.

The April number of the Domestic Monthly is gay with illustrations of the newestspring fashions. The earliest and most reliable information concerning coming and current styles is always obtained from the Domestic. This magazine is the only one which has a full-equipped branch office in Paris for the collection of information and de- signs. The Domestic Monthly is always practical,and its advice can be implicit- ly rehed apon. Nothing is exhibited for mere effect or show. Among the

useful articles this month are Spring Street Costumes, Wraps, Evening

Toilettes, Millinery, New Siyles of Coit- fure, and the always atiraetive Domestic Art. Every department of the costume is appropriately discussed. The Lit- erary Department of the Domestic Monthly without question places it among the very best literary magazines in the country.
