Craig's Doings.

Monrreat, Dec. 22. The financial troubles of the manufac- turing companies, fed by the absent presi-

dent of the Exchange Bank, out of the funds of that institution, are the chief | topics of conversation here. Everything

seems to bs so inextricably involved, that there is no such thing as unravelling them. The number of enterprises he patronized for his owa profit, but out of the funds of the bank, was legion, and all will turn out to be heavy losses to the shareholders. The deposit receipts in the insolvent are valued at 10 per cent. on their face value. Earthquake at Lisbon. Lisson, Dec. 23.

The first earthquake shock of Saturday occurred at 1 30 a. m., but was not gever- ally noticed. A strange shock occurred at 3.30 a. m., and lasted twelve seconds, being accompanied by heavy rumblings, which awoke the entire population of the city, and caused a panic in the narrow sireets. Some old buildings and a number of chim- neys were damaged.

At Setubal, eighteen miles southeast of Lisbon, the shock was so severe that many inhabitants rushed to the seashore.

The anarchists who were arrested for | advertising and promoting the projected meeting in front of the Bourse, on Friday, | 7th instant, and other anarchists who were | indicted for mannfacturing explosives here, | were tried, convicted, and variously sen- tenced to terms of imprisonment varying from one week to six months. When judg- ment was pronounced upon the prisoners by the court, several people in the audience shouted, ‘‘Vive la Anarchie.”’

A Seandal Rumored.

L’Etendard says Mr. Charlebois told several persons that he gave the Prime Minister of Quebec $5,000 in connection with the contract for the Parliament build- iu.s The same paper states that it has most positive information to the effect that Wuartele, Provincial Treasurer, resigned his portfolio on Tuesday last, and that this action was precipitated by the exposure of Charlebois’-De Beaufort scandal.

Vessel Ashore.

Boston, Dec

It is thought that the schooner ‘‘August A. M. Smith,” of Lockport, N. 8., which went ashore off Little Nahamt, yesterday, can be taken off by a tug with but little damage. The veseel left Murray Harbor, P. E. L., Dec. 3rd. There will be a loss on the cargo which consists of 3,600 bushels of potatoes.

Steamer Ashore.

Grasaow, Dec. 23.

The Anchor Line steamer ‘‘Bolivia,” from Glasgow for New York, has gone ashore at Wemyse, on the \Clyde, and has filled with water. Her passengers took to boats, which remained alongside the vessel for several hours in bad weather.

Diep IN Jatt.—On Saturday, a woman named O'Reilly, widow of the late James O'Reilly, who kept the Waterford House, on Dorchester Street, was arrested by the police for disorderly conduct in Newsou’s Furniture Warerooms. The police state she was labor- ing under a fit of temporary insanity when arrested, As there was no court on Saturday she was sent to jail to await trial to-day, She became ill, yesterday, aud her illness in- creased until last night when she expired. Her body was taken in charge by Richard Reddin, Esq., solicitor of her husband’s estate. The deceased was about sixty-five years of age.
