The floods now prevailing in Silesia were attended by water spouts. A large part of the town of Hirschberg is submerged and houses in the edjacent villages are flooded. The railway near Salzbrunn is washed away. A number of cattle perished. Despatches received from Breslau, state that during the last 24 hours the rise of the river Neisse has been most alarming. Disastrous floods are also reported in Bohemia and Moravia. The Danube is expected to over- flow its banks shortly as the river Inn and mountain streams are rising rapidly. The quay at Linz is already flooded.

In the inquiry which is now in progress at Mullingar, in connection with the murder of Mrs. Smythe, in April, 1882, an inform- er testified that an assassination society had been started by Michael and John Fagan, wtth the object of removing tyrants and bad landlords. Among those who had been named by the society for removal were two gentlemen named Smythe, living in the County Longford, and two of the prisoners were deputed to execute the sen- tence. The eight prisoners charged with complicity in the murder of Mra. Smythe were present at the meeting held in March, 1882, outside the house of the mother of the Fagros.

Struggling young authors, who are apt to grumble over the hardships of a literary life, would do well to bear in mind certain passages in the career of the late Dr. Wm. Chambers. For several years he had to exist on four shillings a week. His lodg- ings cost him eighteen pence, and his food half-a-crown! This may seem almost in- credible until we turn to the subjoined memorandum of his daily expenses :-— Breakfast—Porridge, jd; buttermilk, }d., id. Dinner—Broth, ja.; bread, jd , 14d. Supper—Ss.me as breakfast, 1d. Total 3}d. Very few modern scribblers would care to exist on such modest rations.

Lord Randolph Churchill, in a written communication to Mr. Gladstone, stated that he would hand over to the latter a historical memorandum proving the Khe- dive’s complicity in the massacres at Alex- andria if the Prime Minister would pro- mise a full enquiry. Mr. Gladstone said that in any step the Goverement might take the position of the Khedive, as the ruler of Egypt, would be duly re- garded. Lord Randolph Churchill, in a second communication, states that he will forward to Mr. Gladstone an indictment of the Khedive on a charge of being the real author of the massacres, and that he (Lord Randolph) will be prepared to co-operate, to the utmost extent of his resources, in bringing up such witnesses as may be neces- sary to prove the writer of the statements in particular,

The story of Queen Victoria’s illness is once more repeated. A cablegram to the Boston Herald, dated London, June 21st, says, “‘It is rumored that the Queen is again ill with melancholia, and itis reported that she will probably abdicate.” ‘This week's London Truth prints the following statement:—The Queen has, for two months been in a state of mild melancholia which, in the course of time, if not relieved, would probably become very difficult to treat. Her condition has naturally caused great anxiety, because of the tendencies of her family. Her Majesty and Princess Beatrice will, in the autumn, go to the vicinity of Florence, Italy, where they will remain two months. :
