Universa) Color-Blindness.

Color-blindoess, as usually under-

stood, is a blindness to red, to greet, or |

to blue or violet; and about one male in every twenty-five appears to be unable to discriminate between the principal colors of the spectrum. In a stricter sense, all persons are eolor-blind, for, although Cnevreul is said to have been able to distinguish 14,420 tons of color, it has been proven thatthe human eye is totally incapable of receiving all the

vibrations of color which must exist in the spectrum. Flower Pigments. Hansen, a German chemist, finds

that the colors of fruits and flowers are furnished by a very small number of piyments, which he classifies into three groups: first, reds, second, yellows,wod third, blues and violets. He omits chlorophy!l green, because it is com- paratively rare in flowers. Orange is produced by a th ckening of a deposit of the fundamental yellow pigment,the coloring matter being the sume iu the rind of an orange as in a yellow butter- cup. Roses and carnations show the characteristic red pigment, in which variations are produced by the presence of acids.

Training Domestics.

If a majority of mairons would qualily themselves and then try to im- part to servants their knowledge of the various trades that sre comprised ip housework, the aggregate advantage would in a short time be great. A girl with common sense can learn to cook all plain food ia two or three months. It would certainly pay to sead her to the laundry for a tew weekly lessons.

Half a dozen lessons in “second work,” foliowed up by # pot Loo oppres- sive supervision, will make a compe- tent housemaid. This tutorage wii! indeed consume a considerable amoun of time, but it does not upset the family as does the recurring and dread period of “changing girls.” We all koow of househelds where these seasons follow in quick succession year after year. The iady thinks she is unfortunate in her servants and finally concludes they are all nataral enemiesto the comfort and best intevest of their employers.

Bat the fact that some women have so much worse “juck” with girls than others can only be logically explained by the supposition that they are worse mistresses. “But whatare we to eat while the servant is learning?’ Inquires anew !ittl wife, before whom the problem begins to loom darkly in the domestic horizon. It is ne worse to bear the blunders of one who is im- proving all the time than to be experi- mented upon by a dozen strangers,nobe of whom are competent.
