New Steamship Line.
The Canadian and European Steamship Company will una monthly steamer after between Bremen and Montreal in summer, and Halifax in winter. It is expected that business-will develop to that extent in a short period that a fortnightly steamer will be demanded, and the company is willing to give it. The company gets a bonus of $2,000 per trip from the Government. This arrangement cannot fail to bring a very large proportion of German immigrants to the Dominion, a class of progressive settlers of the finest description. This new undertaking ts another cheering sign of Canadian commercial development. If the same progress that has been made in the last two or three years continues a few years longer there will be direct lines with all the chief ports in the world. It is not generally known that there is a regular and direct steamship line with Siam in the far Kast. A great many importers say there is an opening, and a good one, for a line from Hamburg, which would also stimulate immigration from the Fatherland.

treal, has now been formed, with a consti- tution which has been made to enit the Canad‘an clergy, as much as possible. It recognizes their right to pronounce authori- tatively on faith, morals and political ‘action, that they may not be opposed to the teaching of the church. The first duty of members is due to Canada, but they believe it to be the duty of all Irishmen, to further, by every legitimate. means, the efforts of Ireland’s leader, Parnell, to ob- tain for that country the freedom that Canada enjoys from home rule. The con- stitution, turther, denies being disloyal to the empire, but insists on Ireland being placed on an equal footing with the sister \islands, and not remaining their disaffected slave. It further disowns crime, and pledg- ‘ing support to Parnell, adopts the Irish | National League Constitution, which prac- | tically makes it a branche Much as it may | be desired, this movement will not be ac- ;cepted favorably by the old Daniel | O'Connell and Smith O’Brien followers, many of whose honored gray heads, are shaken in an admonitory manner at the proceedings of to-day in Ireland- and the United States. The clergy have not yet pronounced upon this new organization, but are all powerful to make or to mar it.

Railroad Matters.
NEW CANADIAN OUTLET FOR THE NORTHERN PACIFIC RAILROAD,
Montreat, June 26.—The contract for another great railway enterprise has been awarded. The project is to build a new line, to be called the Ontario & Pacific Railway, from Cornwall, on the banks of the St. Lawrence, to Sault Ste. Marie to connect with the Northern Pacific Rail- way over the big bridge at the western terminus. The distance is seven hundred miles. It is claimed that this will make the most direct and shortest line west from the Atlantic sea-board, and will give the Northern Pacific an advantage over both the Canadian Pacific and the Grand Trunk from ocean to ocean, The Dominion Government charter gives the company power to bnild a bridge over the St. Law- rence, and American connections are already Secured from the border line to Portland, Maine; Boston and New York. A large part of the new road wili run almost parallel with the Canadian Pacific at Sault Ste. Marie. It will receive large bonuses from municipal and otler sources. ‘The contract was given to L. M. Shute, of Philadelphia, and the promoters are Ameti- can and Canadian capitalists. Bonds to the amount of $12,000,000 will be issued. This will be a tremendous rival to the Canadian Pacific. Duncan Melntyre and R. B. Angus, Directors, and Van Horne, General Manager, have gone in haste to the Metapedia fishing grounds, down the St. Lawrence, to meet President Stephen, of the Canadian Pacific, in regard to this threatening scheme. The project, which has been kept secret, has created a sensa- tion here.
_—_- The Crops.
The Winnipeg Times states that reports from all parts of Manitoba and the North- west agree in saying that the crops could not do better. Wheat, oats and barley are all doing well, root crops are in prime con- dition, and new potatoes are expected the first week in July. In the Territories the crops are even In a more advanced condi- tion than in Manitoba. The wheat crop is likely to be a very heavy one, especially in the Regina district. The Times estimates that at least 100,000 acres of land has been put under wheat for the first time this year, and put down the yield from these new fields at not less than 2,500,000 bushels. The Nerthwest settlers are sowing the best of seed, the Fyfe wheat, and their grain will be of the highest standard.

Messrs. Monroe, Conservative, Pringle,’ Liberal, and Healy, Home Raler, have been nominated for the vacant seat in Par- liament for county Monoghaw. Mr. Par- nell has gone to the county to assist Mr. Healy in his campaign.
Although the Panama canal operations were begun two years ago the branches have not been opened. Notwithstanding this slow rate of pregress, the expenditure has averaged, since the inception of the work, something like twelve million dollars a year.
It is feared the yacht ‘‘Waywood,” of New York, and crew of three men, which sailed from Portsmouth for St. John, N. B , June 13th, was struck by a black squall which occurred that afternoon off New Hampshire coast, and capsized @nd found- ered. She has not been heard from.
A Paris dispatch says the Bourse is at a complete standstill. All attempts to stimu- late the rise of stocks are utter failures. All credit and public confidence are de- stroyed. There is an abundance of money, but all faith in investment seems to have vanished. The German banker, Erlanger, appeared in the Police Correctionnelle on Saturday, charged with unlawful trans- actions connectel with the Credit Genera! Francais. The court ordered a criminal investigation. The downfall of the Credit General Francais is expected, and it will doubtless carry with it several other in- stitutions.
It is to be hoped that the team of artillery- men sent to Shoeburyness this year will be able to win as much credit for Canada as did the pioneer team of 1881. Lieut- Colonel Macdonald, of Guelph, who is to be in command, has done all in his power to get together the very best men, and it is wsderstood that he has succeeded ad- mirably. The team sails on the 2ist of next month and the matches being on the 4th of August. The expense is estimated at $3,500. The Dominion Government has given $2,000, and the public will be invited tosupply the remainder. The pre- sence of them in England is another means of bringing the name of Canada before the British people.
HamMM WILL Row At Loweti.—William Speiman, trainer of Albert Hamm, now at Pullman, UL, has been instructed by the Halifax Rowing Association to enter Hamm for the scull race to be rowed at Lowell on July 4 The two will consequently not return to Halifax until after the Lowell regatta. It is expected that Peter H. Conley, who is also in the hands of the Halifax Association, and now in training on Bedford Basin, will be entered for the single scull contest at Boston, on. July 4. The defeat of Hamm by Hosmer, in the Pullman regatta, was a great disappoint- ment to the friends of the former hero, who looked to see him secure a better place
in the race. It was expected by all that he would be able to take second money.
Mrs. Bell, vife of Professor Graham Bell, the elcctrician, is deaf but not dumb. Prof. Bell first met her at a reception, and so expert was she in reading speech by the motion of the lips that they conversed to- gether for some time without his discover- ing her infirmity. At last, walking through the conservatory, where some of the Chinese lanterns had gone out, he made some remark requiring an answer. But none was forth- coming, it being not light enough for her to see the movements of his lips. He re- peated the remark, and again only got silence for reply. Mystified, be soon escurt- «d her back to the parlor, and then, in the brilliant light, asked her why she did not auswer him; but his amazement was re- doubled tenfold at her ready reply:—‘ I have never heard a sound in all my life.”
Tue Turr.—The contest between Look- out and Tom Collins, raced at Moncton on Wednesday last, resulted in three straight heats for Lookout. At the first heat Look- out who kept a good lead until he reached the home stretch began to act somewhat badly, but was soon after got down to good work and crossed the line in 2.53. The second heat was won by the same horse in the same time. The third heat was then called and on the third score the judges shouted *‘go |"? Lookout had a slight lead, and kept it till he neared the home stretch, when he broke, but soon recovered his footing and set down again to good work.
