Having lived over two years in the Northwest, felt astroug imelination once | more to visit the *pight l:tils ieland,” and | tu lock pon the old familiar faces. I have been well repaid for the long weary journey, by tue exceedingly kind aud cor- dial greeting I have mei with on my ree turo—a reception most gratifying and a kindness I fully appriciate.

It may interest your readers, at this slack season, if I give some little idea of the life imthe Weat. [ will not givea des- cripuion Of the jouroey, which has been often repeated, more than to say that owing to tne failure of the man [ had engaged :o go ous in charge of mv car of stock, i bad ogo withthm myself; and I may add that I never made the trip so pleasantly, I enjoyed the roomy and airy caboore infinitely more thanthe clove aad sinffy Pullman in which, on a warm night, you canpotsicep for the heat and oua cold ove you are kept awake by the cold,—to say nothing of the fear of microbes for which the heavy plush upboletering and the thick blankets form a very cosy nest.

I found the conductors, with but two exceptions, Courteous and obliging,and was always invited to take aseatin the cupola of the caboose, from which elevatiou, in a revolving chair, | got a complete panorama | of the country through which we passed. I got into trouble ouce, owing to the con- ductor being ordered to proceed at once where he told me be would be detained | half an hour. I had scarcely landed on | the platform when I saw the train move off. I had some difficulty io overtaking it, and should have bad much more, but | that [ had taxen the precaution to note the number of the train as well as thatof the car, which the man in charge of a car of stock should always do. I geton a passenger train for which I bad to wait some hours and thus could not find my train. I then wired to have my car left at a station tilll came up. By this means, I at once overtook my horses. This acerdent added two days to the length of my journey: —mora!, keep cleze to the conductor.

When I first started iato ranchiogI was | induced to go into partnership with a man who had a lease of 13,000 acres ata, cent an acre. this I[ thought! must be a grea: advantage ; bu: I soon} found out my mistake. The horses did | not approve of the grazing, and went off, to find sometbiog more to their taste, and seitled dowo on the Kootenai River, fron | which part nothing coald keep them. So L decided that a3 the horses would not stay with me. I must stay with them. J] took upa ranch on the Kootenai, dissolved the partnership, and there keep them still. |

We are situated a few miles from the Rockies aad about twiceas far from the Montana border. The climate on the whole is very fine, though the westher is uncertain. Changes come without notice and quite suddenly. The worst of the climate is the want of rain and the high winds. But forthe last few years they wave had abundance of moisture, and the wind does no turin. Horses and strong cattle live out all winter and find their own food, The grase, which is short and dry, cures in the tavorabl-., and is nearly as nourishing in winter as in summer. Spring is the hardest time on stock, and if it 14 protracted they fail eomewha’. But if the sprivg ia fine, horees will be-sleek and fat io April. The yearliags sucking dams, sometimes are not much largerthao themselves, Calves and weak cows have to be fed The practice now is to wean the calves io November and feed them ca gre-n oa's and hay. Weak cows are kept in th pasture and fed in stormy weather.

The Chief Justice, in the course of his charge to the Grand Jucy, made a freling reference to the death of Mr. Malcolm McLeod, for many years a leading member of the Bar and a good citizen in the fullest sense of the term. His Lordship said: There 1s another subject, a more mournful one, to which I feel it my duty, my sad duty, to allude.

Those of you who are accustomed to attend this court will hereafter miss from among the members of the Bar the presence of one who for many, many years was awell known and familiar figure.

I referto Mr. Malcolm McLeod, whose sudden and unexpected death yesterday afternoon caused a shock to this com munity.

Mr. McLeod was an eminent couneel. In hie death the members of this court, tor whom I «m sure I may speak iodividu- ally as well as collectively.feel that they have lest agreatly esteemed and highly valued friend, the Bar has lost an able, accomplished and high-minded advocate, and the commun- itv has lost a worisy citizen whose con- duct and ¢xamol- ia every relation have been of the most ton rable character.
