Shifting Ordnance Competition.

Detachmenis from the several batteries of the P. E. Island Brigade of Garrison Artillery have been, for some time past, actively engaged in preparing themselves tocompete for the prizes offered to the garrison batteries of the Dominion, by the Dominion Artillery Association, in a shift- ing ordnance competition, and on Friday | and Saturday evenings of last week the | detachments from Nos. 1 and 2 Batteries competed, Brigade Major Freeland acting as umpire. The shift was as follows:—A 24-pounder gun, of 50-ewt., lying »pon two short skids, twelve feet in rear of a plat- form measuring twelve by eighteen feet, in the centre of which stood its carriage, was taker completely around the platform, by the left, and returned to its original position on the short skid—a distance of some 150 feet. It was then carried forward and mounted upon its carriage, the carriage left in its original position, and all stores clear of the platform. This was done by the detachment from No. 1 Battery in the incredibly short space of two minutes and thirty seconds, No. 2 Battery’s detachment being only seven seconds behind them— their time bemg two minutes and thirty- seven seconds. Last night a fire broke oat in the house of Chas. Estites, agent of the Missouri Pacific Railway. Mr. Estites’ wife and child perished in the flames, and he himself was seriously burned.
