A Bean in His Ear.—A lad named Tower, 6 or 7 years of age, living on Tele- graph Street, has been suffering for the past three days from frightful pains in one ear. Dr. Botsford was called in yesterday and made an examiaation, which showed that a bean had lodged in the ear. This he succeeded in extracting, and the lad received immediate relief.— Moncton Times.

Sentence Teo Severe-—A petition sign- ed by a vuumber of influential citizens of Halifax has heen presented to the Minister of Justice asking for a commutation of the sentence imposed upon William Walker, who was convicted.onthe charge of steal- ing a $7 gold ring, and who was sentenced to four years inthe Dorchester peniten- tiary. Itis claimed in the petition that the crime committed by Walker did not warrant such a sentence

Fire 1x Summersire.—Late last night fire was discovered in the cellar of Mr. RB. C. MeLeod’s warehouse io which was stowed a quantity of pressed hay. Accord- ing to the Guardian correspondent wher the engines arrived ube windows were re- moved and a number of carriages and§ the office furniture including a cabinet desk were taken out. The fire was soon sub- dued but not before conriderable hay was burned and much damage done by the water.

Montreal, Sept 29.—The Star’s London cable save :— “Lord Ashbourne’s name is only ona of several that are mentioned in connection with the post of Governor- General of Canada. The Duke of Aber- corn’s name is being as munch talked of in | this connection. The offi:ial statement is that nothing has been seetled. Lord Ash- bourne’s selection for the office is most unlikely, in view of the urgency given’ to the Irish questions now coming before the British Cabinet. It is significant evidence, however, of the importance now a'tached to the Canadian Viceroy, in that a member of the Cabinet who has been thrice Lord Chancellor of lreland is seriously suggest- ad for the post.
