..tA drowning fatality was pre- vented at Montague yesterday shortlyrbefore noon by the prompt action of Mr. Henry Munroe. when Mr. Raymond Dewar fell ten feet unconscious into the water .at Steven; Wharf, which is at pre- sent und-ergolng repairs.

Mr. Dewar. at the time, was engaged in removing the old top walings on the wharf. and had cleared one end. it is unknown exactly what took place then. but Mr. Munroe, who was work- ing nearby. heard the splash and ran to investigate. Seeing Mr. Dewar in the water. he ran to rclease the raft in which he was assisted by Mr. George McKee- niali. Mr. Munro pulled the un- conscious Mr. Dewar aboard the raft. and proceeded with artificial lrespiration. in which he was as- sisted by Mr. D. A. Maclnnis of Dredge ll5. Dr. Preston Mac- lntyre arrived on the scene in a few minutes, and Mr. Dewar was taken to his home.

An unfortunate accident occur- red last evening about 6:30 on the highway approximately two miles from Montague. when :1 truck driven by Mr. Syd Munn of .Murray River crashed into a horse drawn wagon going in the same direction.-Mr. Harold Gor- don, Roscncath, driver of the wagon. was taken no the King's County Hospital. where he re- ceived treatment. l-lls condition was described as not serious.

Both vehicles were proceeding towards Bcll's 1-llll, when a car approached coming towards Mon- tague. Mr. Munn was unable to see the wagon ahead. which did not carry a reflector, and the thrcc-ton truck crashed into the rear of the wagon, demolishing it. The horse broke away, but was later found. and taken to Mr. Gordon's farm.

Mr. Gordon was removed to the hospital. Montague detachment R. P. investigated the case.

This payment will be made by the weekly pay-cheque deductions along with ordinary income taxes. Income tax exemptions at Dre- sent arc s1,000 for single person: and s2.000 for married, with ad- ditional married excmptions of 5150 for each child eligible for family allowances and am for those who don't receive allowances.

Effective Next July

The new income tax levy. for the individual. doesn't. come into effect until July 1 next because of Mr. Abbottis plans to drop the M per cent defence sui-tax and to set the basic tax rate "as appears to be necessary in the light of the situation next spring."

The additional two per cent will bring the rates to 1'1 per cent. on the first 510,000 and -17.6 per cent on profits above 510,000. In ad- ditlon to the federal tax. there are corporation income taxes of five per cent in the eight provinces with which the Federal Govem- mcnt has tax agreements and levies of seven per cent in the two remaining provinces--Quebec and Ontario.

..'Exten.alve plans were made ...: the sponsoring of the annual I-fallowe'en parties at the Home and School meeting held last eve- ning at the Montague School. The meeting was predded over by Mrs. J. D. Maclieod, in the ab- sence of the president, Dr. G. S. A. Inman.

There were twenty-six present. including a number of teachers and parents who were attending for the first time. and who were cordially welcomed by Mrs. Mac- Leod.

It was decided to hold three parties this year., and that the teachers would make the neces- sary divisions in grades. Several committees were appointed: Sen- ior commitfee. Mr. Vernon Mac- Lean, Mrs. E. H. Stewart. and Mr. Ralph Beck. together with two student representatives from lzrades nine. ten. and eleven. In- termediate committee. Mrs. H. T. Jamieson, Mr. Cecil Beck. Mrs. C..J. Boudreault. Junior com- mittee, Mr. Carl Boehner, Miss Evelyn Underhay, Miss Shirley Jenkins, Miss Eileen MacKenzie. Mrs. Elsie Watter-worth. and Mrs. A. D. Macxenzie.

It was also moved and seconded that Mr. Lorne Wigginton be in charge of the costumed parade from the school to the United Church hall. and which will take place the earlier part of the eve- ning. During the next week all plans respecting- the Hsllowe'en parties will be finalized by the several committees at. a joint meeting with the president.

Mr. Carl Boehner presented a report of the Amateur Caval- cade, which he described as a huge success. and which showed an im-provemenit over that held last year. A vote of thanks was extended to the Shur-Gain rep- resentative. Mr. Charles Fraser, who sponsored the program.

The financial report was read by Mr. Archie Hilchey. He also reported that the proceeds from the Cavalcade were very grai- ifylng.

Mr. Bochner reported that sev- eral classes had been held to teach as many as possible how to operate the projector, in order that it may be placed at the dis- posal of the different organiza- tions of the community.

The question arose as to what constitutes membership in the Home and School Association. and it was stated that every parent, or anyone interested in school work. is not only eligible, but also urged to attend the regular meet- ings of the association.

The great necessity of a school library was stressed, owing to the fact. that books of reference and children's books were complete- ly lacking in the school. It was decided to leave the question in abeyance until a later meeting.

It was felt that greater stress should be given to sporting activ- ities on the school playground, and

that at this time 'of year the football field should be in oper- ation, and that the volley ball
