Grit Treachery Again. A tone delayed Justice tothe Fisher- men of P. E. Island has been done by,

the Dominion Government. The sum of $30,086.10 has been voted to reimburse ain claims to certain merchants fer in duties improperly collected from

them by the United States customs authorities in 1871. It may be asked why the Dominion Goverument, seeing

But the facts are:—In the year 1877 a memorial was forwarded to the Dominion Govern- | ment claiming $50,804.79 for duties im- | properly imposed on fish and oils ex- \' Pp. orted by the merchants of this Pro-! vince to the United States. The memor- ial was duely and wisely considered by the Government. Therefore, on the 22nd of May, 1883, having deducied the | sum of $20,818.69 due Messrs. Hall & Myrick, American citizens, the Gov- erument placed the sum of $30,086.10 in the estimates to reimburse the Island merchant's claim. When the item was read in Parliament, Mr. L. H. Davies, incredible, as it may appear, rose in his place and opposed the pay- ment of it. He was supported in his objection by the Leader of the Oppo- sition, Mr. Blake—that gentleman who always speakes strongly against every-|. thing like justice and generosity to Prinee Edward Island. The item was therefore withdrawn, aud we are told by the Toronto Gloe “that Sir Leouard Tilley was ashamed to ask for the grant after the true nature of ‘the job’ had been exposed by Messrs. Blake and Davies.”

Neither Mr. Blake nor Mr. Davies would stop here. They saw that again our Island fishermen were seeking jus tice, and, with the intention of further prejudicing Parliament, caused the in- sertion of the following paragraph, a month ago, in their organ, the Globe :

‘*Mezers. Carvel! and Howlan are also push- ing their claims, but the Conservatives think that these gentlemen should be satisfied with the gift of $30,000 which the Government proposes making to them under the prete xt of refunding certain duties collected by the United States Government wpon fish. Such a ‘‘fishy”’ claim has never before been recog- nized by any Government iu any country, and it cannot be regarded as anything more than a donation to certain parliamentary supporters.”

The efforts of Messrs. Blake, Davies, and the Globe were, we are pleased to state, unsuccessful. Parliament is now thoroughly acquanted with the justice of ovr fishermen’s claim, and instead of heeding the prejudicial cry raised by these gentlemen, it passed the sum set forth in the estimates. But Mr. Davies is pot satisfied, aud the Globe correspond- ent, Gorman, no doubt inspired by Mr. Davies, says the endorsement of the Island’s claim isa ‘*:candalous transac- tion.”

To show how false and treacherous is the Globe—the organ of the Grits, in its statement that the $30,000 claimed by our fishermen, was a gift to Senators Carvell and Howlan, we publish the following list of claimants :

It will thus be seen that the list of clamants contains the names of opponents as well as the supporters of the preseut Government. With the knowledge the Globe correspondent has of P. E. Island affairs—being an Islander himself—he could not be so utterly ignorant of the

subject as he appeared to be. We infere, therefore, he _ willfully lied with the knowledge and _ consent of his adviser, Mr. Davies. But what defence can Mr. Davies make of his action. Last year he opposed the

payment of the sum due the fishermen, and the amount was struck ont of the estimates. A case which was not strictly legal, but one of such hardship that it was treated as an exceptional ove —one by which our fishermen would, if bo opposition were offered, obtaiu their just rights—was by his efforts, aud by the support of Mr. Blake cast aside. This year, his organ, the Globe, has endeavored to thwart every effort made to recover the duties, and Mr. Davies winked at it. When he returns to his constituents many of whom are fishermen, he will, we hope, be able to explain. But the facts, we fear, will stand strong against him.

—The member for West River Jast evening entertained the House of Assem- bly by a characteristic speech on the

Budget. When six o’clock struck Mr. reaueerie had delivered a lengthy speech—one with which a gentleman

as any ordinary Nihilist. Altogether Mr. Prowse’s speech was a splendid one. It was more than an answer to the delicate efforts of the member for West River and for Strathalbyn —Mr. Sinclair. —During the debate on the Budget, | yesterday, Mr. Sinclair censured the Government for expending any morey on the wharves or piers since the deci- sion in the Holman vs. Green case was given. In this course he is consistent with the Grit party, whose great object appears to be to find fault ‘with every- thing the Government does. Last year, Mr. Sinclair and his friends spent hours abusing the Governmeat because there was not a _ sum _ placed in the estimates for the pur- pose of repairing the wharves. ‘This year some of them declared that nothing should have been spent in repairing these works since 1882, while others of the Opposition take up the time of the House in showing that there should be a sum placed in the estimates for the purpose of rep: airing these works this year. Why don't the Opposition decide ou what they would do in the case, and propose it to the House? So far they appear to be as much opposed to each other in their ideas, and to what they said last year, as they are to the Government.

The greater portion of the time of the House, on Monday and yesterday, was occupied in debate on the motion for the House to go into committee on supply. On this motion a wide scope is given, and it is customary for every member in the House to make a speech. The question which received the greatest prominence in this debate were the Piers question, the expenditure and receipts of the Govern- ment{during the past year, the question of local taxation, and the general manage- ment of the affairs of the Province by the present Government, which seems to meet the general approval of the country at large.

The Bill respecting Standard Time was passed yesterday.

The following Bills passed the House to-day, and were seni to the Council for concurrence, viz:

The Bill to incorporate the Charlottetown Hospital.

The Bill to incorporate the Prince EKd- ward Island Hospital.

The Bill to incorporate the New Era Printing and Publishing Company was re- ported from committee agreed to.

The Bill to incorporate Mark Wright & Co., was also put through the first reading and referred to the Private Bilis Com- mittee.

The Address to His Honor the Lieut.- Governor, requesting His Honor to for- ward to His Excellency the Governor- General, for transmission to the Queen, the joint address of condolence to Her Majesty the Queen on the lamented death of Prince Leopold, Duke of Albany, was presented to His Honor yesterday, by both Houses, in the Library, to which His Honor appropriately replied.

Tie Act intituled ‘*The Summerside In corporation Amendment Act, 1884,” was reported from a Committee of the Whgle House this forenoon, agreed to with some amendments, and ordered for the third

reading {o-morrow. ' Hon. Mr. CamppEett presented to the House: Statement of amounts paid by

Public Works Department on account of Mount Stewart Bridge, during the year 1883; also vouchers relating to the same service. Statement of expenditures by Public Works Department for feul and repairs to’ Prince of Wales College for the year 1883.
