Cardinal Manning addressed an audi

During all the time he spent abroad, in France or Italy or Rome, he never saw a druaken woman, though here and there a drunken man, but very few: When Frenclimen and Italians came over to England they often for the first time, saw men and women drunk in the; streets. Toward the conclusion of his re- marks he condemned the employment of married women outside their own house- bold, saying that when a woman married she entered intoa solemn contract for lite that she would give her time to her hus
band, her home and ber children, and if she did not do so, it destroyed the whole domestic life.

Five of the Glasgow Bank directors, convicted of uttering false abstracts of balance sheets and sentenced to 8 months, imprisonment, were released on Wednes~ day amid the hooting of the crowd. Other directors, convicted of fraud, theft and embezzlement, have stili tea months to serve.
Tbe new railroad bridge at Lewiston, over the Niagara River, is to be one of the fiuest of the kind in the world. It will be a steel-trass structure of one span with both railroad and highway track. The river at the point to be crossed is 607 feet wide. The new company has $1,000,000, and the work will be begun immediately.
The first railroad line inte the great wheat region stretching north from Da- kota into Canada has just been staked and is ready for grading. It starts from Castleton, Dakota, runs to the British line sod beyond into a region which was supposed five -years ago to be closed to all farming, but from which the report now ia that the further north you go the bet- ter the wheat and the soil.
