The Potato.

INCREASE IN THE NUMBER OF THE VEGE- TABLE.

Year after year, the annual show pre- sents us with fresh varieties of the potato, says the London Standard. Some are notable for being early, others for being healthy. One is warranted to be invariably mealy, a second to be delicately flavored. None of them are without merit, though so exacting have the connoisseurs become that, though 41 new varieties were tested last autumn, only four came up to the standard of excellence which entitled them to cere tificates of merit. This year 1700 dishes were on view, Oue person exhibiting 24 distinct varieties, and, though some rival growers were less successful, their Magnum Bonums were as big and as good as ever, their Regents and Dalma- hoys and Champions aad Skerry Blues and Early Dons and Mona’s Prides al! that they ought to be. Amid such a profusion of forms one can, imagine the

amazement with which Sir Walter Raleigh would survey the endless

shapes that the ““Batta” that he first planted in Ireland has assumed in 300 years. The historianand the botanist have still to settle the native country of the potato and the individual who first brought it to our shores. The first known figure of the “Irish” potato is that given by Gerard in 1597, and as

this father of Eoglish botanists dedi cates the second edition of his “Cata-

logue” to Raleigh, it is evident that he regarded him as entitled to the eredit of bringing to our shoes “a foode as also a meate for pleasure.” For long there were prejudices againstit among the people at large, and in Scotland even well into the middle of last century, the plant was shunned. It was supposed to be unwholesome, and have properties of an even more compromising character. it never displaced the oat as the main- stay of the north, and itis well that it did not. For wherever it has been extensively grown, there the people have learned to depend upon it and have in consequence sunk into a lazy, listless condition, only varied every now aod again by famine, when their staple crops fail. Buckle, it may be remem- bered, attributes to the potato much of the misery of Ireland; and perhaps it may be affirmed in general terms that a country is prosperous in proportion to the limited extent it depends upon the potato for subsistence. When a people obtain food with ease they cease to exercise their wits, and sink into semi-barbariasm, and when nature denies them sufficient nutriment much the same result follows. A middle course between ease and ceaseless toil is, there- fore, the one most favorable to pro- gress. — Daring Robbery. SIR FREDERICK ULRICH GRAHAM’S RESI- DENCE IN ENGLAND BURGLARIZED.

One of the most daring robberies on record occurred at Carlisle, Eng., on the night of the 29th inst. Netherby Hul!, the residence of Sir Frederick Ulrich Grabam, was robbed of most of its valuables by a gang of burglars. One of the servants being awakened by the noise of the burglars hastened to the nearest police station to secure help. When returning with the police the gang of burglars were met hastening away with their plunder. The robbers drew revolvers and opened fire on the police, wounding three of them, two fatatly. Inthe confusion that ensned the burgiars made their escape. A large foree of detectives are now at work searching for the robbers and the police of other cities bave been notified by -elegraph to look for them.

—_- Moody and Sankey.

Immense congregations of people take part in the Moody and Sankey services now gcing on in New York. To a great audience made up of Chris- tian workers,|Mr Moody said :—When I pray, Ltalk to God, and when I read the Bible He talks to me. It is impor- tant that the soldiers of Christianity shou'd know the use of their weapons. Many zealous Christians are unable to expound the Bible. Use all the Bible and believe it all. I believe Jonah was three days in the whale’s belly, because it was used to show how Crist would lie three days inthetomb. There are too many lesson leaves and quarterlies. Sabbath School teachers should all have Bibles. They should also have a concordance, The man who knows his Bible best has the greatest faith,

Toddy. Palms grow in abundance, and the cocoanut is a large source of profit to the cultivator. In Southern India they have a peculiar way of extracting juice therefrom for the manufacture of an in- toxicating drink culled “toddy.” \A cut is made at the end of a growing fruit, and to the latter a small earthern pot is attached to catch the goozings, Twice a day the liquor is collected by men who climb the trees in a curious fashion. They have a sort of strap of bamboo about seven or eight feet long, which they fasten around their own bodies just above the waist. They also have a smaller strap of the same sort around their fect. They ascend the tree by raising the trap a footor so up the trunk, and thea they pull themselves Up by it, and they climb up and down very rapidly ard easily.
