R., with 3,836 miles from Halifax to Vancouver. Besides this we have an uninterrupted waterway from the Straits of Belle Isle to Port Arthur, at the head of Lake Superior, since we

the great traffic om the Lakes during the seven months of navigation in 1892, from
the fact that 11,214,353 tons of shipping passed through it. This is 3,502,304 tons more than passed through the Suez Canal during the whole year.
The trade of Canada rose from $131, 027.352 in 1868 to $240,999,889 in 1894. Kighty-tive per cent. ot the trade of Can- ada is carried op with Great Britain and he United States in nearly equal propor tions. Taking the imports fur 27 years since Conrederation, we tind a yearly aver age of $44,663,000 from Great Britain, and $44,857,000 from the United States.

Now, let us takea glance at our equipmen to carry on this trade, and see what great opportunities are within your reach. Take the dairying interest. In 1867 we only shi pped 611,428 pounds, while last year 154,977 i poun is, or about 55 per cent of Eng!and’s total import of cheese, whilst in | utter we only shipped two per cent of Englaud’s wants. But we are doing better all the time. I know there are some who say this dairying is only spasmodic, but 1 jo not share that opinion. In a recent edition of the Dominion Dairyman it is stated that in Ontariothere are invested in cows, lands, factories, etc., used for dairy purposes, over $175, 000,000. Milk produced in one year, 350,000,000 gallons, valued at $36,000,000.

of an almost unbroken line from the Atlan- tic to the Pacific out of which we shipped last year $26 504,000 worth. This work engages thousands of men along the great harbors ot both oceans and creates @ great carrying trade to England, the Un ited States and from the Pacitic to Asia and Africa.
MIXERL WEALTH.
Then take tLe mineral wealth, which in in Canada is very great. Cual of the best quality is found in Nova Scotia, the North- weat Territories, the Rocky Mountains and Vancouver Island. Ie 1863 the output was 623,392 tons, last year it amounted to (4,000,006) four millien tons.
We have also iron ore rivaling the best Swedish, and this in close proximity to coal both on the Atlantic and Pacific.
Valuable gold mines are now being worked in various parts of British Colum bia and it is stated that over fifty millions have been foun] in the placer mines of that Proviace.
Then there is the great Northwest,which gaveus this year thirty-six millions of bushels of wheat. Sir A. T. Galt in speaking of this great inheritance in 1881 said:
“Let me mow very briefly endeavor to convey to you some partial idea of the magnitude of the trust that has been as- sumed by Canadians in undertaking the colonization and government of the north- ern half of the continent of America. Pic- ture to yourselves a domain nearly as large as Europe, stretching from the At- lantic to the Pacific ocean, with its south- ern extremity inthe same latitude as the south of France, and its northern bound- ary along the shores of the Arctic ocean.
Possessing the finest forests in the world, widely spread coal fields, most extensive and productive fisheries, watered by the most re-
markable natural distribution of lakes and rivers, enriched with all varieties of min- erals, aod now known to possess an enor- mous area of fertile prairie lands destined to become the future geanary uf England. This vast country reaches as the crow fles from ocean to ocean 4,000 miles, with an area south of the latitude of St. Peters- burg of at least 2,060,000 of square miles capable of cultivation and of which fully one half produces every crop grown in Great Britain.”

Sir,—In_ looking over pthe prize list for the skating races at the Rink on Wednes day next, I notice that there are several money prizes offered. Weall know what trouble the Wheelmen’s Association here experienced Jast season owing to several of its members being professionals. No doubt money prizes are a greater inducement to skate for than medals, pocket knives, &c., but when we come to consider that next season these same young men whe are now about to make themselves professionals tor the sake of a few doilars, may want to compete in the bicycle races, we see how reprehensible is the system of offering cash prizes. Messrs. Dawson and Rogers are themselves prominent members of the Wheelmen’s Club, and as such should as muchas in their power discourage pro fessionalism. I know that, this matter being brought to their notice, they will re- consider their prize list, or at least dissuade anv amateur skater from competing for money prizes,

THE New
Sin,— The anti-Laird faction of the grit party in Charlottetown, having succeeded in throwing sufficient cold water on Mr. Laird’s candidature for Mayoralty to force that gentleman to refuse a nomin- ation, are now showing their true colors. A requisition is now being hawked around by High Sheriff Robertson, who is seeking signatures asking Councillor Haszard to run for Mayor. This is what was all along predicted, and now the prediction is being fulfilled. An official of the Peters gov- ernment travelling around with a petition is pretty strong evidence of the direction of the wind and should tend to shew Mr. Laird’s real friends h:.w he is being treat- ed by members of his own party. Mr. Laird was willing to run if he got a re- quisition from both sides, The Conserv- atives were willing, but some of the strong Davies grits were against giving Mr, Laird the opportunity of becoming the chief magistrate of the city, Hence their op- position, PRESBYTERIAN.

Politicians Going to Cape Breton.

There is much interest here in political matters, and the feeling daily gains ground that Sir Charles Tupper’ 8 return to the House of Commons will bring added life and courage co his supporters.
Hon. Dr. Montague will leave ina few days fur Cape Breton, and it is probable that he will be soon followed by Hon. Mr. Foster. The campaign in the Grit inter- est will be directed by Mr. D. C. Fraser, of Guysboro, anf Colin McIsaac, of Anti- gonish.
Hon. John Hagyart and Sam Hughes, M. P., had an interview with Sir Charles Tupper on Saturday.

Probabilities and Speculations.
Orrawa, Jan. 20. The cabinet was engaged nearly the whole of Saturday considering the esti- mates. As is well understood, the general business of Parliament is to be transacted
at the present session, but whether the estimates will be passed in their entirety depends largely on the Opposition.
A successor to Colonel Powell as Ad-
jutant-General of Militia has not yet been
appointed. Lieut-Col. Aylmer is acting Adjutant-Genera], and is freely spoken of us likely to succeed Colonel Powell.
During the past day or two the names of Colenel Otter, of Toronto, and Colonel! Smith, London, also have been mentioned.
