fisherman named Rude, are as follows :— Thomas Larner, James Lynn, and the deceased were returning from fishing, when

seven miles from shore the y saw a’ school’ of biack-fish right ahead of them. Ruce advised them to change their coursa and not come upon the monsters; but, unfortunately, the caution waw unheeded, and as the boat passed over where the fish were supposea to. be, it was struck in the bow by one of the monsters, almost splitting it in halves. The boat began to sink almost instantly. The men seeing nothing left for them but to take to the water, took their boots, and each one taking an oar abandoned the wreck, which immediately sank. Their calls drew the attention of a boats crew about a mile off, who made to the rescue, but having a strong head wind to contend with, an hour before they reached the place. Alas, fer poor Rude, he had sank tofrise no more, te the statements of the afloat.ovly about fifteen minutes. A few minutes and all three would have met the same sad fate. SALE OF THE FAMOUS COBHAM STUD,

The famous bre eding establishment known ag the Cobham Stud was sold at Cobham, England, on September 19th and 20ch. The lots numbered si xty-one brood mares, thirty-three foals of the present year and four stallions. which sold for a total of 21,- 585 guineas. Of the stallions, ‘* Blair Athol” was the most famous, although he did not realize, by fifty guineas, as much as ** Wild Oats,” who sold for 2,000 guineas te Baron C. Malizahn, of Anstria. ‘‘ Blair Athol” was bought by Mr. Stewart for 1,950

guineas, aud it was understood that he would do service next year at Horsley Towers, the residence of the Hon.

Randolph Stewart. ‘‘ Blair Athol” was ori-

ginally sold for 5,000 guineas at the break. up of Mr. Jackson’s stud at Fairfield, York- shire, his purehaser being Mr. Blenkiren, at whose sale in 1872 the son of ‘Stockwell’ realized 12,500 guineas, his purchaser being the first Cobham Stud Company, and at their sale in 1879 he was retained by the then ‘reorganized establishment for 4,509 guineas. Several of the best mares and quite a number of the youngsters were bought for New Zealand and Auatralia, where a class of horses are being bred that promise to be the equal of if not superior to those raised anywhere for speed and eteying qualities.

Dear Sirx,—Will you allow me a few lines in reply to ‘‘ Observer” on the Scoit Act in King’s County. He truly says that “the Act is virtually inoperative” and that with one or two exceptions no action has yet been taken to enforce the law.” 1 imay te}h ae Observer” that if all the tem- perance’men im the County had continued to sit with folded arins, bemoaning the illicit trafie, there would be no exceptions te the general law. breaking for him to report.

The faultof such a ‘deplorable state of matiers, in my opinion, rests in a large ipeasure on the professed friends of tem- perance,

I don’t wish to screen the Inspector for the non-perfermance of what is really his duvy. But from the nature of things it is impossible for him to go through the County hunting up evidence to ‘convict those who are reported to him as breaking the law. Temperance men who live in places where the law is broken must do this work as heretefore, if it is ever to be effectually*done. ‘‘Observer” says that liquor is sold openly and above board in over a dozen different rum dens that might be named.

Knowing all this, then, why does he not report the proprietors of these ‘“‘dens” with the necessary evidence which he can so easily get to the Rev. G. W. Hodgson, the indefatigable Secretary ef the P. E. L Branch of the Dominion Alliance in Char- lottetown, who, while withholding the name of the sender, if desired, will in his official

capacity, forward at once the information to the Inspector, with instructions to deal with the matter without delay. Lest “Observer” do this, and I feel certain that he will have no cause to comp!ain that the Inspector has failed in his duty.

It is quite an easy matter for certain persons to fight temperance battles when the enemy isnot in sight, and they can point their guns tow ards the stars, where

* nobody is killed,and nobody hurt.” It is however, quite a different thing to fight

when the foe isin your midst.

In this case, backbone, skill and perse- verence are eazential to success, and if these are lacking in the professional friends of temperance, then we may expect to hear the continued wail ef ‘rum dens” in our midst.
