Vaidlaw, promiment in railway circles, and a feis ud, were walkisg along, when : mar with a revolver in each hand confronted them, demanding money. Laidlaw’s friend showed fight, and the robber ran. The crowd collected and joined in the pursuit. One of the crowd overtook the ronaway, who wheeled around and fired. The ball passed between the forefinger and thumb of & man named Harley, The man was quickiy run to the earth; he gave his name as Frank Leslie, of Cork, and is a penitentiary bird.

The trial of persons accused of belonging to a Socialist revolutionary society called the Potetariat, has} been conmeluded. Bar- koroski, a justice of the peace of Warsaw, Lury, a Captain of the Engineers, and four oth rs were sentenced to be hanged. In addition to these, eighteen have been son- tenced to sixteen years’ servitude in the mines of Siberia, two others ‘to ten years in - same place, and two more to Siberia for life,

P. Rowell & Co. of New York. The reason for this may be found, not in tue fact that Mesars. Rowell 4 Co. do not want business or are unwilling to drum for it, but that they find a cheaper and more efficacious wav of securing patronage ia to keep their names before the public by using the adver tising columos of the newspapers. Doing this they attract those advertisers who wish their services, anc avoid annoying or wasting the time of those who%have not yet arrived at that conclusion, The newspaper is the most per- sistent and at the same time the beat mapvered of all advertising canvassers.
