What the Beer Business Does for the Country.

Let us carefully summarize what has been said elsewhere it: reference to the inancial results to the country of moderate veer drinking.

A workingman whe drinks daily twe slasses of beer at five cents each, will this way spend annually $36 50.

This represegts about 45 gallons of beer. This represents about 3} bushels of barley.

For this barley the farmer gets about $2.45.

The balance of the workingman’s $36 50 stays in the hands of the brewer and liquor seller. The workingman has swallowed his beer and has nothing of value to show ‘or his money. He may have weaker nerves, & less clear brain and a dangerous appetite, but we leave these out of our cal culations now, and say he has literally authing.

Suppose that prohibition became law,

If weallow the manvfacturers and dealers in these articles 40 per cent. of their selling price for profit, the farmer will still zet $21.90, and the traders have $14.60 But it must be noticed that now the work- ngman has had something to show for his money. Food in his cupboard, clothing tur bis family to the full value of $36 50 And it must not be imagined that the far- mer has failed to sell his barley. He has exported it either in grain or changed to beef, and has received the $2.45 for it all the same, but with this difference, that the country has in it $2 45 more than it would have if its workingman had drunk that barley in the shape of beer.

Let us put these calculations in the form of a comparative table, showing wat is the result of the workingman’s $36.50 in these different cases :—

Some one will be ready to ask, ‘*Do not the brewer and liquor dealer in the first case use this money in employing men and patronizing production?’ The reply is, “Yes, but not nearly to the same extent as do the farmer and trader in thw second case.”

The yreat brewing and distilling interests of Canada are not only preventing the accumulation of wealth by the people, they are absurbing and locking up in their pos- sessiun the little wealth that does exist. The second case may be made even stronger,—The liquor seller will be driven under prohibition to engage in some better business that will bless the country instead of cursing it. The wealth they produce and hold will not be represented by $0.00, and the aggregate $75.45 will be still fur ther increased; but, in the first case, under the beer system, there can be no change in any of the items of $0.00, as the outc me of the workingman’s expenditure of $36.50.

Loeking for Manufacturers.

THE SUCCESS THAT ATTENDED THREE MONTHS BUSINESS OF A NEW CONCERN, A chosen committee of shrewd business men of the St. John Board of Trade, met a few days ago to consider in what way the City could induce more manufacturing ; to talk over the possibilities of their town for manufactures, and to make known its advantages. This is one of the signs that the people of St. John are alive and seeking to in- crease its business and manufacturing out- put. Another sign is the success that some of the later manufacturers are meeting with, Thieis notably the case with the Hawker Medicine Company, which has just completed its first quarter of business. Last fall saw ‘he formation of this company which includes among its stockholders gentlemen who have been fore.sost in the business world of the province, who have not been afraid to be enterprising and to operate extensively, fearlessly and con fidently when they did enter upon su under- taking. That isthe spirit with which there men tock hold of the Hawker remedies, and the push and ability shown by the directorate and mansgement since the first of January has been suck that at the end of March the showing was such as to surprise even the most sanguine directors. When it is stated that the sales were so large that one quar- ter of their value paid their entire newspa- per advertising which appeared in seventy ive newspapers in the maritime provinces, then some idea can be formed of the popu- larity of the goods. Much of this is due to good advertising, to practical travellers and to energetic management ; but all this would have been in vain had not the Remedies themselves the true secret of popularity — they are what they are represented to be. 2 Iy you are in poor health, and are in doubt what to take to restore your health

The following is a list of the clothing distributed to the poor :— Boots, 66 pairs; socks and sockings, 29 do; mitts, 18 do; drawers, 6 do; cvata, 23 do; pants, 28 do; dresses, 32; shirts, 24; under- garments, 54; sheets, 4 pairs; night dresses, 6; caps and hats, 18; shawl and sacques, 6; blanket, 1; sundries, 29. BRANTEORD, March 20.—The Expositor last week published an article on the cave of Archie Rymal, of this city, which has caused consider able excitement in Brantford and district, |: appears Mr Rymal hae had more than his share of suffering during the past few years, 60 far wes he run down from kidney disease that he had lost the power of his limbs aad back. He could only get around with the aid of two crutches, or when assisted by kind hands, His death wae daily expected. Tuat Hay.—The Patriot a shori time ago—in referring to the fact that a larg: number of farmers in the eastern part of the Island are shovt of fodder for their cattle—gave its readers to understand that the Local Government contemplated pur- chasing hay and sending it east for sale at cost and chargea on credit to those in want ofthesame. Abcut the same tisne petitions were passed arvund for signature. Mr Premier Peters, it was said, was anxious tv give a hay grant, but wanted something t work on. Hence petitions were needed These were promptly signed and forwarded to the Gevernment. But alas for the poor farmers. After being told that the hay wassure to come for the asking, nothing has been done yet by way of supplying it Was the whole thing only a political dodge from fiest? It certsinly looks very much like it, but it is too cruel a dodge to prac tice on honest farmers, and is sure to meet the resentment it deserves.
