effective and humourous. Un- fortunately it. is not true. His Honor Lieutenant Governor T.

W. L. Prowse flatly denied it and told The Guardian he had never even mentioned the subject.

"At Summerside a Wings Party marked the graduating of naviga- tors at the Air Navigation School. It was while attending this party that the Lieutenant Governor made his offer to present the squadron with the cannon-one of those which played its part in the early defence of Canada."

Educational Program

Dr. Macmillan stressed the value of the educational program being carried on among the people through the efforts of the Execut- ive Secretary. J. P. Msclnnis and stated that this fact was reflected in the many cases coming to the attention of doctors in the early stages of the disease.

The leading part the Province was playing in the fight against cancer was borne out in that some six Island doctors had attended special courses of instruction at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. in the last year, These doctors were highly qualified to deal with early cases both as to diagnosis and treatment. Dr. 'MacMillan reminded work- ers that they were performing a Christian duty in taking an active part in a campaign such as that of the Cancer society. lie called upon one and all to exert every ef- fort to achieve the objective of 55,000 for the city and 810,000 for the Province. '

Referring to the Provincial President. Dr. W. J. P. MacMillan OBE. he said. "the older he gets the better speeches he makes." He considered Dr. MncMillaii's speech last night the most inspir- ing he had heard him deliver. Mr. Ashford went on to say that "the older the Doctor gets the peppier he gets. He is a spring of perennial fervor and enthusiasm for cancer control. and other good Mr. Ashford concluded.

HAMILTON. Sept. li -(GP) - A baby girl was born at Hamilton General Hospital yesterday. min- utes after the child's mother died as a result of a broken neck. The little girl-three and one-half months premattire-has not yet been weighed but is holding her own at hospital today. Mrs. Arthur Tew of Gait. suffered in broken neck last week when she fell down a flight of stairs at her farm home. Yesterday when Mrs. Teiv took ti turn for the worse. Dr. L. E. Lotlmer delivered the child by surgery. a few minutes after Mrs. Tew succumbed.

Mr. Cudmore's Retirement

ln retiring from business Mr. Ernest A. Cudmore does so after a long career of sewing the public and making a host of friends. both personally and in a. business way. He is severing his connection with the retail grocery trade after 21! years.

It was in September. 1922. that he started the business in comp- any with his brother. the late Harry W. Cudmore. By painstak- ing work and courteous service they built their business into one which has long enjoyed an env- iable reputation for fair dealiiitz fit that time they have catered ti! one of the largest retail service trades in the city.

Since the death of his brother last year Mr. Cudmore has carried on the husiness. but in the carl.V part of this year he suffered a ser- icus illness. This has made him come regretfully to the conclusloii that his retirement from active work is necessary for his health's sake.

The business which he and his brother established is now passing into the hands of a man with wide experience in the grocery field. although this is his first. venture in the retail trade.

Wholesale Experience

Mr. J. Fulton Pierce has spent riearlv 20 years in the wholesale world. l-le was on the sales staff of DeBiois Bros. for ten years be- fore going to the Atlantic Whole- salers in a similar canacity in l9-ti. During the last world war he served three years in the Army and then returned to his position where he had a great deal of ex- perience in serving the retail stores of this Province.

Mr. Pierce is a son of the latr- Mr. and Mrs. John S. Piei-ee of this cltv. His father was it one time City Councillor. A native of Charlottetown, Mr, Pierce attend- ed West Kent School before enter- lnvr the business world. '
