Sap Drowninc.—The body of John Cahill was found drowned it Ward's mill pond at Kingston, South Wiltshire, yester- day morning. He was missing since Friday, and when last seen was standing near the place where the body was found. The de ceased was about 55 years of age and unmarried. Dr. McLeod, coroner, holds an inquest on the body to dey.

Raitway Accrprent.—Yesterday afternoon No 2train from Snmmerside for Charlotte- town, broke down about two miles and a half east of Wiltshire, causing a delay of several hours in reaabiog her destination. The ace cident was occasioned by some of the machine ery in the engine giving out, necessitating the making of repairs before the train could pros eced, The mail express was delayed at Wilt- shire about half an hour in consequence of the

Montreal, Dec. 13.

Hon. C. H. Tepper arrived here from England yesterday. Refering to the | Behring Sea commission, the Minister of ; Marine stated that. although his tongue was tied to a certain excent ke could say that the matter had been carried on in a most harmonicus manner. The tribunal would meet at Paris on February 25, and as the counter cases would be served, not later | than the same.month this would necessitate the Mnirter’s re urn to London about February 10. Speak'ng cf the ministerial changes at Ottawa, he said: ‘I was asked t» serve urider Sir Juhn Thompson, and needless to say, was ready to follow such a distinguished statesman, either in a ministry or inthe ranks. A better man for the position I do not know, and I may say that in Londen one of the most gratify- ing things mec with is the fact that Sir John Thompson's character and ability are appreciated as muchas in his native land. The Minister states that Sir Charles Tupper 1s in good heal: h and will not come to Canada in the near future as was announced.

New Regulations for Contractors.

Orrawa, Dec. 13,

Commander Gordon, who has been on the sick list for several weeks past, is con- sidered improved in health.

The new regulations regarding the Guv- ernment contracts having been put in force. The contractor will hereafter be required to put up a cheque for ten per cent, of the contract price in place of five per cent., and only 80 per cent. will be paid on the pro- gress estimates, in place of aincty per cent.

It is reported that Mr Strong will this week be appointed Uhief Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada.

Witness Spirited Away.

Sr. Jony, Dec. 13.

The mest sensational event in the grave- yard insurance trial yesterday was the statement that Norman Morrison, brother of the deceased and nominal beneficiary by insurance, had disappeared. Crown Prose- eutor Pugsley charges that he has been spirited away in the interest of the defence. Further evidenee was given to show that the deceased was, at the time of the insur- ance, in the last stages of consumption.

The Fatal Rifle.

Diasy, Dec. 13.

A fatal shooting accident occurred at Bear River on Saturday afternvon. The careless handling, of a rifle by Archie, sec- ond son of Dr. Maxwell,resulted in the dis- charge of the weapoa, and a ball entered the lad’s chest, causing his immediate death.

Lonpon, Dec. 13. Poet William Watson, recently granted £200 for writing the best ode on Tennyson, and urged for the Laureateship, has become violently insane and placed in an asylum.
