Cricket. ~The match between the mar- ried and e‘ngle elevens of the ‘Phoenix’ Club, played at Victoria Park, on Saturday afternoon, resulted in an easy victory for the married men. It was decided by the first innings, by a score of 71 to 39. On the married side, F. S. Longworth made 30 and W. C, ilobkirk 15, to the bowling of V. and J, Longworth and J. Yeo. The only good score on the single side was 12, scored by V. Longwortt to the bowling of W. C. Hobkirk and N. MeLeod, The bowling of V. Longworth and W. C. Hob- kirk was very good. LArcRkxy.—Three par.ies were arraigned before the Stipendiary Magistrate on Sat+ urday morning last for larceny. One was a female named Barry, for stealing a table- cloth ‘rom a peddier named McShane; the Other a Mrs. Terlyzick, for stealing forty- five yards of silk from a perdler nimed (Hare; and the oth: rwas a man named ‘Neill, charged with the larceny of $20 f.om a sailor namc i Lielly, who was drunk atthe time the larceny was committed. The evidence produced against the first was Clear, and she was ordered to pay a tine of $10 cr cne menth’s imprisonment. In the case of the second, the depositions of the witnesses were effective, and she was held for triai at the Supreme Court. In tie case of the third, the evidenc> pro. duced did not implicite ©O’Neill, and he was discharged on his own recognizance,

Pitrssure, Aug. 14.—An accident oce curred at McCandless Station, on the Al- legheny Valley Railroad, at 1 o'clock this afternoon, The Emberton accommodation train northward, one hour late, ran into the rear of a train of cars loaded with re- fined oil, which was standing on the main track. The oil on the rear car of the oil train took fire from the engine, and the flames spreading consumed the engine, baggage and two passenger cars of the ac» commodation train. Conductor W. R. Waltham, Engineer W, Cunningham and the fireman of the accdmmodation train were badly burned. ‘Twoor three passen- gers were slightly burned.

HAILSTORM AT NICE,

Ji Secolo, of Milan, gives some particulars of a terrible hailstorm which burst at Blan- sasco, not far from Nice, recently. The country for a considerable extent round the place is said to be truly covastated. The storm lasted from halt-past three in the afternoon till half-*past four, accom~ panied with thunder and light uing such as to terrify the bravest men. Such was the fury of the tempest that nothing was to be heard on all sides but screams, groans and wailing, the people believing that the end of the world had arrived, [Le writer of the account testifies as an eye witness of the scene. After the tempest had ended the earth was covered to the depth of more than ten centimetres (abut four inches) with hailstones, the smallest of which were like nuts. The country, which was rich in vegetation, was comp!etely de- vastated,

The books of the City Council may not be up to your standard of exceilence. That would not justify your Worship in making a charge which is as incorrect as it is uncharitable. You will tind on closer inspection that the City Clerks are servants of the law and of. circumstances, in the matter of making entries, and not masters of their own judgment in exercising discres tion as to what might prove a fair criterion of their capacity for keeping accounts. [| have repeatedly endeavoured to effect a change in the manner of doing our work, but in every instance | found that the law stepped in and pointed out certain ways of taking accounts of moneys; and, that in fact, the Act of Incorporation does not at all recognize a ‘‘City Accountant,” and that the City Treasurer 13 the only person to whom reference is made. So that until some definite system be introduced and agreed upon, by which a cuange can be eltected, the clerks of the Council will be able to make little, if any alteration in the routine they have adopted. When you change the lawfyou will simplify our work. To illustrate :—

A license fee may be deposited with the clerk an entire month, or more, before a license is either granted or refused. In one case the auditors will tind a discrep. ancy of dates if the money be entered un- der the date of its receipt instead ©. the date of the license. In the other case— refusal—tbe money wou!d have to he re-~ funded, which could only be done by an order in Council and an oder on the Treasurer, in which event it would appear as expenditure, which it realiy was not. Again :—the collector may have money to deposit, The clerks dou’t know of its exe istence till they hear of it through the Treasurer.
