For some time it had been reported

| that a great grit demonstration was to

take place at Montagu «ridge; that Prem- ier Peters was to be present; and that the Toriesof Murray Harbor and Cardigan would have ocular demonstration of the hopelesspese of their candidates winning at the ensuing election.

Consequently, when the notice of the meeting was advertised in the Patriot, and handbills were profusely distributed at the exhibition at Georgetown, where nearly 2000 people were present, everyone expected that the large hall at Mon itugue wonld be packed to its utmost limit.

The first to claim attention was the Hon. Thomas Kickham—the man from Souris who is asking the electors of Cardi- gan to send him to represent them, although none of them had any nominating him until the Premier held his pow wow at Campbell’s hotel. Mr. Kicki am is nota succes as a platform speaker, although he did better than eome other candidates that made their maiden speeches on this occasion. He referred to the debt left by the late Government and the sale of the debentures by the present administration; but nary a word did he say in explanation of that $854 that is missing in the report of that traneaction. But methinks that when he gets before a public meeting in the Cardigan District, where both sides will be allowed to speak, and where the electors will have an op portunity of putting pertinent questions to the Government candidatée, he will have to explain that matter, and let us know what became of this very considerable sum. Go. B. Aitken, Esq., of Lower Montague, made a few remaz:.s, intimating that he was a candidate for the Murray Harbor District; and was followed by the Premier, who, of course, was the principal attraction of the meeting. Mr. Peters was in very good form, and with his long ex- perience as a Jeader at the bar, is well titted to put the best side on the woret kind of a case. He defended the actions of the Government for the past three years and condemned the conduct of the preceding administrations in pretty much the same way as he did at the convention in Char lottetown, a fuli report of which is contained in the Patriot of a late date. Bat when in referring to to the distribution of districts in King’s County, he himself claimed credit for hav- ing originated that measure, one’s breath was almost taken away by such an evid- ence of unbiushing political ingratitude. The man who uses the literary work of another without givingthe avthor credit is known asa literary plagiarixt and is considered guilty of a most contemptible action; det bees much greater a crime is political plagiarism—to take credit for political measures that’ were proposed first by another, cannot be called by any other name. Does Mr. Peters think the people of King’s County do not keep the records of the Legislature ? Does he think they are poor simp tons who will swallow every word he says ar gospel when they find him delibarately falsifying the record, how can they put any faith in his assertions? Mr. Peters claimed to be the introducer of the Distribution Bill into the legislatures of this Province; but we know that before he ever penned a resolution in that matter, the Hon. Mr. Scrimgeour in the Legislative Council brought the matter before that body. If the distribution of the electoral districts in King’s County was so laudable a work; if it was a measure that would have re- ceived the support of the late Hon. Mr, Whelan, Mr. Scrimgeour is the man who should get theypraise, for it was he that first proposed it, as the journals of the Legislature will prove.

But Mr. Peters is not a modest man. He has no diffidence about sounding his own trumpet, and in listening to him one would think that the present Government “were but a little lower than the angels.” “Give us another lease of power,” says Mr. Peters, “and we will go on making still further reduction in the cost of legie- lation.” “For a small Province like this, twelve or fifteen repreventatives are suffi- ecient to do all the business.” Yes, that is what he is after. Can it not be seen all through hie political career that he wishes to rule alone. And then when the finances of the Province get into irremedial con- fusion, when the debexture debt gets so great that the interest and sinking fund will involve taxation grievous to be =. Mr. Peters will go in for Maritime Union. He feels that so long as Mr. L. H. Davies is to the tore that he has no hope of olr taining Dominion honors. The Premier- ship of a small Province like P. E. Island does not satisfy the ambition of this scion of the landlord system, and with that “vaulting ambition that o’erleaps itself,” he schemes and plots to sell his native lan *-

He will not put on the necessary taxa- tion required to equalize revenue and expenditure, until he has rolled up the debt to a sum equivalent to the indebted- ness of Nova Scotia, and then further eaving and retrenchment may be effected by the Legislative Union of the Maritime Provinces. Is thie the policy he in- tends pursuing ? It looks very like it. Why®was it that Mr. Longldy attend- ed a polit. cal picnic in this Province last summer? Does it not ehow that there is #. secret understanding between the grit government of Nova Scotia and the Prem- ier of thie Island? “Ionly had a ma- jority of one in the House,” says Mr. Peters, “and could do little to what I will do if you give me a larger support.” Yes and who are the men he ie as cing to elect? The greater part of them nominees of his own. He is not satisfied to let the people choose their own standard bearers. i must attend meetings and caucuses and use “human devices” to have his own nominees chosen; and when he sueceeds in_ gaining the election, he will then do as he pleases. He will strike his hand on the table, as he did the other day in the Land Office, and say it must be done.

Dr. Robertaon then got off his litth story about free trade and the advantages | thereof, which we have all heard before | time and time again.

And then came the coup de main of the grand Liberal ratly. Mr. Patrick Kough- an, of Elliotvale, has heretofore been a Conservative. He has taken part in meetings, and was usually called by the Grits “ The Political Fanners of the Tory Party,” whatever they meant by that Anyway, Mr. Koughan aspired to be a can- didate for the Cariigan District, and wa intensely disappointed when the Convev- tion at Cardigan lat summer passed over his brilliant abilities and selected James E Macdonald, E-q., as a fit and proper per son to represent them. Since then Mr. Koughan bas been studying up the polit)- cal situation, and has come to the conclu sion that it is necessary to elect Mr. Peters’ government in order to get free trade with the United States. Anyway, this is the reason he gave for his apostacy, and to hear che cheering he received from the Liberals when his confession and re- captation had been made, reminded ov forcibly of the Scripture saying that “there is more joy over one sinner that repents than over ninety and nine just per sons who need no repentance.” The Grits are fortunate in having two such unvelfivh patriotic converte as Mr. Kickham and Mr, Koughen; and although it is whispered round that the Hon. Thomas fixed Mr, Koughan by telling him tiat he tended to represent the Cardigan District until the Dominion election came on, when he (Mr. Koughan) would be the grit candidate in place of Dr. McIntyre, whose hes th was failing, and that ‘Mr. Koughan would get the nomination he has so long earnestly desired. Yet ther may be no truth in the report; we only give it for whet it is worth. Mr. Anthony McLaughlan was then introduced and made a few remarks. Anthony is 4 decent hardworking farmer and has a merit that few of the grit politicians have, viz., honesty. Although he claimed to bx sure of being returned by a large majority, people from St. Peters District, who ouglit to know, say that it will be to the bosom of his family.

Mr. Scrimgeour was asked to speak three different times, but refused. John

G. believes in saving his fire until he can see the whites of his opponert’s eves, But it one John G. was not anxious to apeak another one was, and Mr, John G. Graham, with a very husky voice, took the floor and addressed the meeting. He had talked xo much at the Exhibition the day before that he was not in form, and the principal statement he made was that he was a poor farmer, aud he was going to support Mr. Peters.

A vote of thanks was given the chairman and the meetiug dispersed in an orderly manner, the grits intensely dissap- pointed at the lack of enthusiasm amon z their followers, and the Conservatives more confident than ever that their eandi- dates for Murray Harbor and Cardigan districts will be elected by large majorities.

CONSOLATION FOR FAT FOLKS.

The medical fraternity is coming to the rescue of the people who have more ayoir- dupois than they want. A physician in a recent newspeper article points out that fat people endure most kinds of illness much better than thin people, becau « they have an extra amount of nutriment stored away in their tissues to support them during the ordeal.
