As arule, our Exhibition Commissioners | have been very fortunate in the selection of days on which to hold our Annual Pro- vincial Exhibition. But this year there is an exception to the rule. The heavy rain

Yet, the Exhibition of this year is well worthy of a visit, and we are glad that an opportunity will be afforded of seeing it on Friday as well as to-morrow.

We think it a matter of congratula-
tion that it takes place under very favor- able circumstances, We gratefully acknowledge the goodness
Divine Providence’ in granting an abundant return during the past yeer to the labors of _ the agriculturist in every branch of pro- duction. At the close of a season unex- ampled for beauty and freedom from storms, and favorable not only for rapid growth aud development of the plant, but the safe and easy gathering in of the harvest.
We venture to hope that Your Honor will, on inspection of the contents of this building and Exhibi‘ion grounds, find that the articles entered for competition as pro- ducts both of the field and of the garden, and the results of the industry of our people, indicate careful culture, progress and improvement.
Our Province has already attained a high position asa stock raising country, and so we are pleased to be able to state that the stock lists are very fully filled, and in- clude many fine specimens, evidencing con- tinued efforts to maintain the advanced position of Prince Edward Island in that department.
In preparing for this Exhibition the Commissioners have encountered some difficulty for want of eertainty until a late date as to the possession of a suitable building and grounds in which to hold it.
Our predeeessors, too, have frequently experienced a like difficulty. It is true that by the courtesy and consideration of Your Honor, and your predecessor, we have been allowed to use a part of the grounds attached to Government House, and by the permission of the military de- partment of the Dominion we to day occupy this, the Queen’s County Drill Shed, but experience has shown us that the exigencies of the public militia service may at tiffies render it difficult, if not impossible, to obtain it,
We trust, in order to remove this incon- venience in the future, that it may be deemed desirable, and by some means or other found practicable, to obtain a suitable building and grounds, exclusively set apart for the Agricultural and Industrial Depart- ment, available at all times for Provincial Exhibitions, and other objects of a similar nature. We feel called upon thus to refer to this matter on account of its importance, and publicly to place op record our views respecting it, but we by no means expect or desire to draw from Your Honor any ex- pression of opinion on the subject thus referred to in this paragraph of our address.
The fact that the Colonial and Indian Exhibition is to be held in London next year, and that the people of this Dominion and Province have been invited to take a part in it, affords us much satisfaction. The present Exhibition presents a yood opportunity for obtaining articles to trans- mit to London as specimens of our indus- tries and producis, which, we hope, will be taken advantage of by the two resident Agents appointed by the Dominion Govern- ment. We are glad that one of those Agents is the experienced Secretary of this Board, as from his long experience and zeal in the cause, we believe him to be well fitted to discharge the additiona] duties which he will now be called upon to perform.
We trust that the good work in this respect will not be left entirely to the Agents—endorsing, as we most heartily do, the expression of opinion contained in the circular on the subject, lately issued by the | Department of Agriculture of the Domin.- ion, that the Canadians of all parties and classes should come forward and vie with each other in endeavoring, on this occasion, | to put Canada in a trve place as the Premier Colony of the British Empire, and to estab- lish her proper position before the world. Every farmer, every producer, and every | manufscturer has interest in thus assisting ;

sure, present many proofs of the industry and progress of our people, for my inter course with them for years past has shown me that they are as steadily and surely rising in the sce'al scale as they are in- creasing in material prosperity. It is but seventeen years sinee a failure in the crops, followed by a severe winter and late spring, compelled farmers, after all their ordinary provender had been exhausted, to feed
‘their seed grain and potatoes to the stock,
and left themselves in such destitution that they were unable to replace it, nor could they obtain seed even on credit, so that thousands of acres of arable land were lying waste in the Province for want of seed. At this crisis the Government came to their relief, and the Legislature voted $10,000 to purchase seed for the people. The public reeords of the following session prove ‘‘that it was the means of averting much destitution.” The money was after- wards repaid to the Government by the recipients. They may now be found in the ranks of our most thriving farmers, whose comfortable homesteads, well-filled barns, expensive farming machinery, handsome equipages and large stock, afford the most positive evidence that by industry, thrift and sobriety, they have secured the com- forts of life, while not unfrequently the sewing machine and handsome parlor organ show their appreciation of the luxuries also.
1 am pleased to learn that the entries on the stock lists comprise some fine specimens of young stock. They will be required to enable the Province to maintain the rank it has heretofore held at Interprovincial Exhibitions, although stock of an improved class is now so very generally distributed throughout the Province that farmers from remote sections claim, 1 believe unreason- ably, that they are raising some equal to anything now produced on the Stock Farm.
I assure you I appreciate the difficulties Commissioners have to contend with for the want of proper permanent grounds and buildings for the Exhibition. The Drill Sheds, even if always available, are now too small for the rapidly increasing list of ex- hibits, and in the other counties, at least, would not contain at one time one-tenth of the people in the vicinity on Exhibition day, so that hundreds never enter the building or pay gate money. I give yon no efficial opinion in the case, and you have kindly disclaimed any desire to draw such from me, but I may state that. I have al- ways considered that we were too prone to to look to Governments to undertake every- thing that we thought would be for the general benefit, and it would be better if we put our own shoulders to the wheel in many augnens. The County that will have puBfic spirit enough to organize every farmer and mechanic within its bounds into an association to purchase a suitable piece of land in a central position, close to the railway line,to enclose it with a good driving treck inside, and have suit- able buildings erected for exhibition pur- poses, might reasonably expect some assist- ance from Civic and Local Governments, and it would certainly secure the monopoly of Provincial Exhibitions which would soon give that connty the first position in many respects. Shall it be King’s, Queen’s or Princes |! The latter with its agricultur- al paper and Farmers’ Conventions already organized, bids fair to take the place if Queen's does not soon realize the position.
The Colonial Exhibition to be held next spring in London is intended to mark an epoch in the relations of all parts of the British Empire with each other, avd Cana- dians of ali patties and classes have been invited to vie in obtaining for Canada her true position as the Premier Colony of the British Empire. I have no doubt this Provinee will contribute its due proportion. I have already called public attention to the subject in King’s and Prince Countics, and it is equally the interest of every producer and manufacturer in Queen’s to furnish a good representation of its productions, and thus assist in securing that extension of trade sure to follow from such a display.
The experience of your Secretary in the organization and management of local and general exhibitions for many years past, will enable kim to discharge efficiently those duties he will now be called upon to under- take in this new departure, and the united collection of two efficient resident agents should embrace everything worthy of being sent from this Province to that grand exhi- bition of the Empire of whigh we are a part.
I beg to thank you, gentlemen, for your patriotism in devoting so much of your timeto your duties as Commissioners of this Exhibition, which I now have the honor to éeclare open Thanking you, likewise, for the kindly sentiments contained in your address, I will jin yon in inspection of the numerous and interesting exhibits here displayed.

crab apples, grapes, plums, damsons, green gages, ete ,—an exhibit which shows that thejsoil and climate of the Island, with good, careful cultiva‘ion, are capable of producin : fruit in as great perfection as in any part of Canada. The exhibitors of fruits and vegetables include (in addition to those already mentioned) Mrs. George Davies, Messrs. George Moore, Alex. Smith (Pow- nal), Alexander McKinnon (Royalty), Geo. Tweedy (who shows some extraordinary turnips and potatoes), George H. King, of Charlottetown, John Curley, Mrs. Theophi- lus DesBrisay, Miss Ann Croken, Francis Auld, Alfred E. Dewar, George McLeod (West River), Hon. L. C. Owen, Captain Murchison, James Kilson, C. A. Hyndman, Mrs. D. K. Scott, Mrs. John Robertson, Albert Mutch, Charles Palmer, Miss Mason, Matthew Allen, D. BUTTER AND CHEESE
These important classes were fairly well filled. The samples of butter numbered about 50 in salted and 40 in fresh, and included many specimens first-class in every respect. Among those who did not show butter this year, was (notably) Mrs. Donald Ferguson, who, in past years stood first in the ranks of butter exhibitors, Owing to the fact that the Hon. Donald Ferguson, her husband, is a prominent politician— Mrs. Ferguson was made Whe subject of comment in the Opposition press of an annoying kind, and she has therefore with- drawn from competitions in this cla+s, The competitors, however, include Mrs, Isaac Crosby, Mrs. David Bears, Mrs. P.M. Bourke, Mrs. Archd. McCallum, Mrs. Jas. Howard, Mrs. Iseac Seller, Mrs. H. Chow- an, Miss Lizzie Cnowan, Mrs. Elizabet) Drake, Mrs. D. L. Scott, Mrs Alex. Me- Kinlay, Mrs. Thomas Ayers. Mirs. Seller, (Hightield), Mrs. Chas, Dickieson, Mrs. Mrs. Jas. Dickieson, and others, who have well maintained the high standard reached last year. Very rich and very good cheere were shown by Mrs. Mutch, Mrs. Jones, Mrs. Abbott, and others, and the Riverside Factory, S'.gEleanor’s§Fectory, and Dunk River Factongwere all well represented.
GRAINS.
The show of grain was smaller than it ought ,to have been, but the samples shown are excellent, and we are glad to hear that they are reserved for the Colonial and [Indian Exhibition. Messrs. A. Kennedy, Lot 48, Thos. Bullman, Robert Bullman, and Robert McCallum comes well to the front in this clase.
FLOWERS,
This class is highly creditable, and deserves a careful notice for which we have not space to-day. They indicate a pleasing advance in culture and refinement, Among the exhibitors are Miss. Katie McLean, Miss Scantlebury, Miss Younghusband, Miss Alice Turner, Miss Fannie Wright. Mias Cundall, Mr. F. H. Haszard, Mr. Ridgeway, Mr. J. G. Eckastadt,Miss, A. J. Longworth, Mrs. W. H. THE FINE ARTS.
The Art Department is only fairly well supplied, but the exhibits are up to the ugual standard. The prizes seem to have been judiciously awarded, though we must express some
wonder that the beautiful landscape, in water colors, by Miss M. Pope, was not awarded a prize. Miss K. McLean’s prize oil landscape is facile princeps, and Miss Wright’s Squaw’s Head, in water colors, is beautifully painted. ‘Two oil paintings, by Miss Wright, are wel! executed, but are sombre in colouring, The first prize for crayon drawing was deservedly awarded to MissTurner. Uther exhibits demandinz men- tion particularly, are a landscape by Mies Chisholm, and a well-executed bust of an {talian girl; also the pair of jars, neatly painted, a screen and panel which is very well execnted, an effective bannerette of cowslips, neatly painted in oils, and a sma!| oval group of dogs, the execution of which is good if the drawing is slightly distorted The exhibit also includes some fretwork and some architectural designs.
CHARLOTTETOWN WOOLEN COMPANY. In the centre of the building, imme-
diately in front of the main entrance, is the exhibit of the Charlottetown Woolen
menced operations in St. John a year ago. The patronage of all their old customers promp'ly returned; and they have since had -—owing to the superiority of their goods— a constantly increasing business. At the Toronto Exhibition, notwithstanding the sharp competition of the factories of Quebec and Ontario, they were awarded a gold medal for best general exhibit of cotton goods. Their stock is in demand, not cnly in the Maritime Provinces, but is used ip all the leading mills in Quebec and Ontario, Their exhibit here is highly creditable to the company.
