It has now been definitely da- rided that a causeway will be built scroll the North Riv: just below the site of the present North River Bridge and it is expected that tenders for construction will be :alled shortly.

The earth dam will be approxi- mately 1,100 feet long have a sluice formed of two lines of steel sheet piling 20 feet apart. By this means the level of the water back of the causeway will U8 kept at high tide all the time and eventu lly will become a fresh -later lake. Th elevel can be low- cred at any time. Provision will also be made to allow salt water fish to enter the man-made lake.

This is part of one of the largest road programs ever undertaken in the Province by the Department of Public Works and Highways. It is heavier than usual due to the many sections of the Trans Can- ada Highway now being done.

The Department is sub-grading the section from Loughran's Bridge in Vernon on the Wood Islands section and st Cornwall through New Haven in Bonshaw. At the sme time approximately three miles of concrete, pavement is to be laid from The Barn towards comwsll, and tenders will be tal- ed shortly.

NEW YORK (AP) - A federal judge held Monday that author Quentin Reynolds was c l e s r i y libelled in a 1949 column by West- brook Pegler, the tart Hearst col- umnist. The jury was told to fix damages.

Judge Edward WeInfeld's ruling came at the close of a bitter seven- week trial, the first to which Peg- ler has been subjected during nearly 10 years as a hard-hitting, no-holds-barred newspaper man.

TORONTO (CP)-Allan A. Lam- port, 49, resigned Monday as mayor of Toronto to stand for appointment as a member of the city-owned Toronto Transit Com- mission. -

He announced his resignation at a meeting of city council. He was serving his third term as mayor.

Controller Leslie Saunders. 53, took over the mayor's chair in his capacity as president of the coun- cil. It was expected the council would elect Mr. Saunders as mayor later in the meeting.
