Separate tenders were called and a contract awarded to the low bidder, Warren Maritimes Lid, for the re-building of North River Road from McGill Avenue to the New City Limits, a dis- tance of 4,950 feet or .94 miles.

Work started on the project in early August and was com- pleted, except for some grading on the shoulders, in early Nov- ember: Re-building consisted of scarifying the old pavement, putting in new catch basins, gra- velling, grading, laying an as- phalt pavement of 36-foot width with asphalt curbs on both sides, n- plaus,..a.fopr foot sidewalk for

practically’ the complete length on the west side of the street. Top soil was also placed and graded on both sides.

TOTAL LENGTH

With North River Road includ- ed, the total ‘length of streets paved in the city in the 1960-61 seasons came to 12.14 miles.

1960. The streets opened and grad- ed included: St. Claire Avenue,

Drive, Viceroy Avenue Exten- sion, Goodwill Avenue Exten- | | ion, Charlotte Drive Extension, | Johnson Avenue, Queen Eliza- beth Drive, Sunset Drive, First Street, Second Street, Third) Street, and Newland Crescent.

The total length of these new streets was 1.81 miles of which one - half mile was the co-op housing area.

An even more extensive pro- gram of paving between the ex- isting curb lines and the side- walks was carried out in 1961 |than in 1960. Parking areas were |paved on the following streets: Euston, Grafton, Fitzroy, Pow- inal, Weymouth, Richmond, Syd- ney, Water, Haviland, Rochford, Great George, Kent, Cumber- land and Ambrose.

The method of paving these areas was changed in 1961. In 1960, the hot-mix asphalt was purchased from the contractors plant and hauled by city trucks and laid by city labour. This re- sulted in a final cost of $3.70 per square yard of asphalt pave- ment in place.

In 1961, tenders were called from all the asphalt paving con- tractors and the contract was awarded to the low bidder, Is- land Construction Ltd, at a price of $3.09, which represented a saving of 61 cents per square yard.

A total area of 13,456 square yards of pavement was laid and completed and a further

11,829 squere yards had the base +coat-only applied as bad weath-
