CUTBACKS: SECURITY CUTS AT UBC THREHTEN CAMPUS SAFETY Vancouver (CUP) -_— Police night patrols at the uni— versity of BC are going to be reduced because of provincial spending cuts and the commanding offiCer of the local detachment wants students to lobby to main- tain patrols. - f 7

Sergeant Fred Hardy said Sept. 17 the UBC detachment would be cut from 11 members to nine. Two other. positions were slashed in 1978.

"I don't want to see any more decreases," Hardy said. "I think that the UBC students and the whole university community deserve good police services, so naturally I am distressed. "

Hardy said the 4 am. to 7 am shift will probably have to be

eliminated.

The. UBC campus lies outside Vancouver's city limits and so the .RCMP detachment has to serve 6,000 residence students

' as well as another 3,500

residents in the university endowment lands.

Hardy said he intends to fight the cutbacks at a ratepayers association meeting in October.

In reference to last week's article “How secure is Secur- ity?“, we would like to com- ment on a few points mentioned.

First, it was one female , officer and one female clerk who resigned, not two officers as mentioned. '

SeCond, would it not seem logical that the decrease in the number of break and enter and thefts may have been due to the night shifts being ade- quately handled by two people? Why, after Security has been here only twelve years, is the situation being studied only now? .7 .

With only one officer on the midnight shift, how safe are our parking lots? How does the

officer speedily detect a fire on the main system in the

Security Office if he is making his rounds.

if security is restricted to one man, will that extra load be placed on the’backs

of the city police force?

If so, it seems a case of robbing the blind to-sup~ port those who cannot see. Also, it seems that the rea— son for having security in the first place may have been to keep all buisness within the university.'

Finally, did anyone take time to think of the parking prob- lem when they<closed N and NA? Lots A,B, and C are so full now that residence students who pay for a half-decent place to park are forced to park way down at the of lot B or C and then move their vehicles back after night classes.

It seems that security ad- ministrators will go to any length, even at the risk of the students, to prove a point.
