Oscak came last evening wher night had thrown her sable mantle over our xsthetic town. He saw but little of our architectural beauty. The ‘‘Market Halli” presented a study to beauty’s latest evangel. Wesaw him make his appearance from the back stair-case, we saw his intense look of pre-Raphaelixtic woader as he viewed the walls, gazed on the beauty of the platform, and sniffed the redolent
smells of stale butter, eggs andcabbage. Oh! that platform! It was too! too! Whatever will Oscar say about us when he is away?
Surely nothing showed so much the need of
*‘Decorative Art’ as the building in which
Osear held forth, We saw a cloud gather
over his face as he feasted on the beautiful
view. He evidently intended to allude to it ;
but then, you know Oscar is considered ‘‘well ; bred,” aud of course he kept silent. We
know for certain that he found it difficult to
strike a beautiful ‘‘pose” in the midst of such
surroundings. He was disheartened by the
ridiculous chattering idiocy of some of our
young men. He was likewise informed during
the lecture, that two thirds of the voung men
of Charlottetown were rogues, (and Oscar walks
off with that item). ‘The information, he so
suddenly received, he turned off in a very nice
manner by saying ‘‘1 do not hear what the
speaker says.” But the fair and beautiful
forms of our ladies cheered the heart and
enraptured the mind of the esthete. Oscar's
hair needed the barber's art. His face was peculiarly feminine at times, but it was heavy
and fleshy. Those who heard the leader of England's esthetic party will find consolation
in the thought that they may be able to talk
about it in their old age.

Tue Methodist people of Tryon, having erected one of the handsomest churches on this Island, intend to dedicate it to the worship of Almighty God on Sunday the 22d of Octobder. The totlowing arrangements for the services on that day have been made ;:—The Rev. Duncan D. Currie, weil and favorably known on this Island, will preach in the morn‘ng; service to commence at 10 30 o'clock. Lavine the service the church will be dedicated according to the form of the Methodist Church of Canada. The chairman of the District and the Rev. 8. T. Teed, paster of the church, officiating. In the afternoon at 2.39 o’ciock, the Rev. Hamplry P. Cowperthwaite, of Corn- wall, aformer pastor of the church here, will occupy the pulpit, and in the evening at 7 o'clock, the Rev. D. Currie will conduct the service and preach, after which the Sacrement of the 's ee will be administered. Tue congregation hive done nobly in the way of contri outing towards the erection of the edifice, but as the trustees are pow responsible for a considerable amount not yet provided for, itis hoped that a liberal collection will be given, an help in this way afforded to them in this most laudable enterprise. A collection will be taken at the close ¢’ each service in aid of the building fund. It is expecte! that the Rev. Mr Corey, Baptist minister, will take part i2 one or more of the services.

The steamer ‘‘ Neptnne”’ has ianded at St. Jonn, N. F., the passengers and bag- gage of the ‘‘ Heider,’ wrecked at Cape Race.
The machinery of the Montreal Abkatto'r Company, valued at one hundred thousand dollars, has been seiz+d by the customs for entering on an under-valuation.
Great excitement is caused here over the arrest of Pierre Rotlot, a clerk in the Post Office for twelve years, a brother of Dr. Rotlot one of the best known French physi cians in Montrea). Rotlot was arrested for plundering the mails of between $4000 and $5000.

Carr Race, Nfid., Oct. 10. The steamer ‘‘Neptune” passed here at 315 bound for St. John’s, with the pas- senzersand crew of the wrecked Steamer “Herder.” She will arrive at St. John’s about midnight.
