Thechild, it seems, had been ill with bronchitis, and when Dr. MeDonald was called in at midnight on Tuesday, it was ascertained that instead of the medicine pre-

Tue most profitable industry of the new Swedish colony in Aroostook county, Maine, ‘s that ot raising potatoes for the starch fac- tories, of which there are twentp-six. The largest of these made last year 492 tons of starch from 98,009 bashels of potatoes. The process of starch making is simple, consisting merely of grinding the potatoes, washing the pulp, and settlang the starch in three vats successively after it has been thoroughly washed with clean water to remove all im- purities. Furnace heat is employed for dry- ing. Starch factories are also springing up at different points in Prince Edward Isiand. The farmers get 14 cents a bushel for all sizes as the potatoes come from the field, aud find this better than assortidg them and then carting them several miles to a market for 16 or 20 cents, which fs not infreyuemtly the

The Morning Post says it learns that the Government of Chiva having manifested a readiness to accept English mediation upon the questions at issue with France, M. Ferry, Prime Minister and Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs of France, has notified M. Waddington, French Ambassador to England, of his intention to inform him shortly of the conditions upon which France will be disposed to accept mediation.

Standard Time.

Boston, Nov. 17. The standard time went into general effect throughout the United States to-day, Sackviiie, N. B., Nov. 19. _All the telegraph offices of the Western Union and Great Northwestern Telegraph Companies, were to-day ordered to use the standard time.

The leather merchants, at their meeting last evening, passed a motion limiting the time of eredit te four months ; for prompt cash, 4 per cent. will be allowed; at 30 days 3 per cent., and after that at the rate of 1 per cent., until four months are up. This arrangement to commence January Ist next.

Hudson Bay Company.

A special cable to the Globe says the report of the Hudson Bay Company was issued yesterday. The companies’ ships have not yet returned from Hudson Bay, and returns of last year’s outfit were not completed, but it is expected they will not fall short of the average of recent years.

Steamer Burnt.

New Orveans, Nov. 17, Steamer ‘‘S. H. Parisot” this morning at Bullets Bayon, eight miles from Neuches. No lives were lost. Her cargo was 310 bales of cotton, 1,300 sacks of oil eake, and 500 barrels of oil. The total loss is $200,000.

Disastrous Accident.

Sr. Reator, Itt., Nov, 17, The accident near this place yesterday on the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Rail- way, was more disastrous than before re- ported. Seven persons were killed, and seven seriously injured.

Vessel Lost.

CLEAVELAND, Nov. 17.

The barque ‘“‘Ajan’ which was being towed by the steam barge ‘‘Ohio” on the night of the 13th inst., and which broke away has never been heard of since. It is supposed she is lost with all her crew.

Steamer Sunk.

Lonpon, Nov. 17.

The British steamer ‘*Condon” from Liverpool sank off Minden, Holland, to-day during a violent storm. Eighteen persons were lost, includjng the engineers who were killed by the bursting of boilers.

Murder Most Foul.

Brooxvitze, Ly., Nov. 17. On Saturday night Mrs. Lydia Maybee, aged 71, and daughter, aged 37, were mur- dered by persons unknown. Mr. Maybee, who is an invalid, was found in bed un- conscious from wounds,

Steamer Wrecked, Paris, Nov. 17. During the gale on Thursday night the Lehigh Transportation Company's steamer ‘Fred Mercer’ was wrecked. The vessel and ¢argo were worth $85,000.

A Confidence Man Caught.

Montrea, Nov. 17. Charles Hammond, an American confi- dence man has been sentenced to four years in the penitentiary, He had operated quite extensively here.

Factory Destroyed. Orry or Mexico, Nov. 17. The San Fernando cotton factory in Hatpan, here, was destroyed by fire to-day. Five operatives were buraed to death. Loss $600,000.

A sensational case, which was privately heard at Osgoode Hall, Toronto, last Friday, has jost come to light. Anderson, a medical student, seduced a young girl, a Roman Catholic, and alleges he was enforced to marry her by a priest, a revolver being used as a persuader. By his father’s willit was enacted that, if he married a Roman Catholic, his inheritance, which amounts to $6,000, would revert to the Protestant Orphans’ Home, and in view of this fact, he souglt redress in the Court of Chancery, ViceeVhancellor Proud foot annulled the marriage, on the ground that both parties must consent, of their own free will, before the a contract can be legal. Much sympathy is felt for the young lady, who belongs to a highly respectable family. tern
