intendent on this Island, reports to the Department of Interior as follows :—
** Our Indians here industrious and hard-working. cultivate the lavd. ‘They have good share of potatoes, and sowed a little wheat and oats in the spring, and I am happy te be able to state that thelr creps look well.
‘*There has been a diminution in the popniation in this superintendency during the yeur. There have been deaths, and only six births. with consumption, which is characteristic to the Indians, particularly to those living in wigwams. Two of them had attained a remarkably old age when they died. Mr. Toney, who died in December last, was 103 years old, and Mr. Dominick Nowceut who died in February, was 102. I am pleased to be able to report that there are very few sick among them at present.
**T found last winter that nearly all ihe indians of Lennox tsiand wera destiinte, owing to the difticulty in procuring stuff fer their manuiactures—baskets, axe-handlea aud butter tubs, and also fer want of a compensating market. Under these try- ing circumstances [ distributed with the utmost care the means you placed at my cisposal, which were thankfuliy received.
‘*The limians residing on the Morell Re- serve seem determined to become independ- ent farmers in some few years ; though not long settled there, they have already clear- ed many acres of land,
** [found in the spring two of them whe had saved their seed from last year’s crep. I encouraged thei by giving their share of the money given by your Department fer buying seed, to help them in hiring teams to put in their crops.
‘Our Indians avail themselves of the help given by your Department in building Nine houses and one barn are being built this summer.
‘*'Phe Indians of Lennex Island are very iemperate, with the exception ef a few. They have taken the pledge this year, and formed a temperance society among them- selves,
‘Goose hunting is’ carried on during part of the mouths of March and April. No less than 800 goase were killed during the season.
‘*T have taueht schoel on Lennex Island since first October last. The children are intelligent, and are learning well, principal- ly reading, writing and geegraphy. The average attendance is smallat present. The children are often away with their parents. ”

Fast horses are plentiful here. Some- times they run away and smash wagons, spilling the contents.
Quite a large quantity of potatoes have been shipped by rail to Summerside the laat three weeks, to be re-shipped to Eng- land,
Twenty-five fine beef cattle were shipped by rail to Charlottetown, to Blake Bros., one day this week, averaging 1,540 lbs. each, from Malpeque and Margate.
New goods are coming in by each train te the merchants. Farmers are busy pre- paring for plauting large crops and every- thing is wearing a busy appearance.

Among the many gigantic enterprizes of the present, there is none ef greater politi- cal importance than that—if carried oat— wf a great ships canal connecting the Bay of Biscay with the Mediterranean, and thus to a great extent, depreciating the value of Gibralter. Sucha Canal, M. Duclere, Vice President of the French Senate, has reason to believe, might, withent any very stupen- dous difficulty, be constructed between Bordeaux and Narbonne, with the effect of saving six or seven days inthe steam tran- sit between the fermer city and Marseilles, Geneva, Leghora or Spezzia. In the event ef warit would give France an immense adyautage, 'y enabling her suddenly to throw her whole navai fore either upon the Mediterranean or Atlantie. Whether in time of peace this canal would be used by England as a short ent to the Suez Canal, would depend entirely upon cireutn- stances at present scarcely within view.
