Corn-Growing Development

MONTREAL (Cpl—Most ag- ricultural development is handled by provincial govern- ments but a private business firm currently is sponsoring a cross-Canada program to pro- mote the growing of grain corn.

The firm is the House of Sea- gram. Grain corn is an impor- tant element in the production of whisky.

But, says Dr. Vernon G. Mac- Kay. director of Seagram's corn c rop development program. there are far wider implie- ationrs

dian farmers supply only about 40 per cent of the market for grain corn in this country. By finding suitable hybrids this fraction can be increased greatly although I don't know it the total demand will ever be met in Canada."

Most imported corn comes from the United States. Argen- tina and South Africa supply al- most all the rest. Seagram im- ports about 50 per cent of its corn needs. particularly for the Quebec and British Columbia distilleries.

it is in these two provinces that the best results in the 1964 experimental corn-growing pro- gram have been obtained—tn the Okanagan valley of British Columbia and the St. Lawrence River valley south of Montrea'.

Selected corn hybrids were supplied to the farmers particl- pat‘tng in test plots. Each farmer is compensated for the cost of land, preparation. plant- ing. fertilization, cultivation and the maintenance of perform- ance records.

In the past. southwestern On-t tario has supplied about 90 per ‘ cent of all the grain corn grown in Canada. Most areas in this! country do not get enough sun ’ and frost-free days to support corn as a cash crop. 1

“Corn is a heat-loving crop." says Dr‘ MacKay. “To there were no varieties that matured early enough. but with the new hybrids we should be able to transform corn from a hazardous to a safe crop."

Seagram now is supporting test plots in nine provinces—all except Newfoundland. Southern Manitoba is one of the largest. most promising areas.

“If they could grow corn In the west it would have a pro- found effect on the beef cattle industry." he says.

“Large production of grain corn would compete with wheat as a cattle feed as it has in the United States. and corn is the better feed. If it can be made available there at a cheap price. it would stimulate the produc- tion of beef."

In areas where corn could be grown. it could be the most profitable grain crop. "You get. a higher yield with corn no mat-
