Were other of our citizens to follow the good egample thus set by Mr. Hodgson, and plant ornamental trees in front of their residences, aot only would they have the beneficial effect of beautifying the town, but in summertime they would be the means of affording a cool shade from the hot rays of the sun.

The Storm in Upper Canada.

TORONTO, Nov. 13. A terrific gale of northwest wind has prevailed over the greater portion of On- tario and Quebec for the last twenty-four hours. The telegraph lines are prostrated, and it is feared that there has been disas- ters to shipping on the Lakes. At Belleville, a ilarge portion of the roof of Robertson's block, on the west side of Front Street, was blown off. Other roofs were damaged, chimneys were blown down, windows broken, and fences and trees destroyed in all parts of the city. A Sbip Canal Projected. Dvusuty, Nov. 13. The Irish Times says a syndicate in Lon- don is discussing the preject of constructing a ship canal, separating North and South [reland.

The Prince of Wales has received many pressing invitations to make a svate tour through Ireland, and Gladstone is encour- aging him to make the tour. Hvis assured his presence will have a salutary effect in quieting the existing troubles, which are becoming more riotous than ever. .The Tories are opposing the plan and pretend to fear the Irish revolutionists will attempt his life

The World's cable despatch gives an interview with Gladstone who corrected the report of his speech at the Lord Mayor’s banquet in reference to the evacuation of Egypt. The Government does not intend entirely toevacnate Egypt. A large part of the army of occupation will be withdrawn early in December. Two thousand of the best troops will be stationed at Alexandria and be strengthened, if occasion requires, and will also maintain in active duty on Egyptian waters a large and thoroughly equipped and manned man-of-war.

The New York Sun's cable Cespatch of Sunday says Gladstone’s speech clearly proves that the programme of the session is still unsettled. There is a general suspicion that Russia is at the back of the Servian troubles, she wishing to replace King Milan with a Pan- slavic ruler. Austria will not permit this, and the Servian difficulty is thus regarded as possibly leading to a long-expected war between Hussia and Austria.

The New York Times’ London despatch of Sunday, says the absorbing political topic of the hour is the Lord Mayor's ban- quet on Friday evening, but despite assur- ances of Gladstone and Waddington the relations of France and England remain critical and uncertain. Amongst the points of difference between France and England are French progress in New Hebrides, the apnexation between the Conge and Gabeoon country, and the threatened seizure of dis- tricts on the River Niger. It is reported that Lord Derby informed the cabinet that if the French Chamber should pass the bill now before them, England must annex Hebrides and New Guinea, in order to pre- vent France peopling the Pacific with criminal off-scourings.

There is great excitement throughout Loughrea, Ireland, in consequence of a system of wholesale evictions, put into operation recently, and a direct resuit of the revived feuds between the Orangemen and Nationalists. The evicting landlords, before proceeding to oust their tenants, se- cured the protection of the police, and had soldiers with fixed bayonets etationed on guard around each farm that was to be cleared. Thus prepared, the landlord had constables to dispossess, all the tenants—

Special cablegrams give very full accounts of the celebration of the fourth centennial of the birth of Martin Luther, At Kisle- ban, the birthplace of the great reformer, the celebration was most imposing. | Throughout Germany the event was honor- ed enthusiastically by all classes. In Italy and Spain all Protestant communities cele- brated by special features. In Berlin, the feature of the celebration was a parade of all the school children, numbering 80.000, in fifty-three divisions, each headed by a band to attend a short service at the churches where busts of Luther, decorated with flowers, stood before each altar. A choir and band on the high tower of the town hall rendered Hinfeste Burg and other Lathcran hymns. The Emperor, with Crown Prince, attended the service at St. Nicholas’ Church, and a procession was \ formed by the Municipal authorities.

The New York Tribune’s London des- patch of Sunday says the Franco-Chinese situation continues to be one of the ut- most gravity, and not the less so because the Ferry Ministry persists in ignoring the probability of a serious conflict. There are hopes that Ferry will be more reasonable than Challemel-Lacour, the premier’s declaration to the correspondent of the Standard expressing again and again con- tempt for the military power of China, and utter disbelief that China will resist France. In the meantime Chinese telegrams convict Tyicou of falsehood in telegraphing that Li Hung Chaug had disavowed the Marquis Tseng, whom the Chinese Government fully sustain. Li Hung Chang also denies the alleges disapproval of the course of the Marquis Tseng. The European press is filled with expressions of amazement at Ferry’s duplicity, which remains without any attempt at apology, though the French Ministerialjpapers call on patriotic French- men to believe their own Government in preference to a foreigner. A credit of nine million francs, demanded by the ministers, is regarded only as one more | effort to belittle the seriousness of the enterprise to which France stands com- mitted. ‘‘It is not enough,” says an Eng- lish paper, ‘‘to pay for the coal of tran- sports,””

A New Route to the Island.

The Chatham World suggests a new route tothe Island. It says:—‘‘The pro- blem of the winter navigation of the Straits of Northumberland, the solution of which is necessary in order that regular communi- cation can be kept up between Prince Edward Island and the mainland, has caused a great deal of anxiety and given rise to many projects. _ The steamer ** Northern Light,” which was built to cut its way throagh the ice, has igno- minously failed to do so, and there seems to be no possibility of a steamer doing so well on the projected route between Cape Traverse and Cape Tormentine. The bridging or tunnelling of the Straits is a work of greater magnitude than the Government will care to undertake just now, and if a more feasible route than that between Pictou and Georgetown can be found it ought to be adopted. Our Richi- bucto friends say that there is open water at all times between Richibucto Cape and West Cape, as the ice never packs between those points, and intend to urge the Gov- ernment to give this route a trial. There is a breakwater at West Cape, which would afford the steamer shelter. The breakwater is only nine miles from the line of the Prince Edward Island Railway, The distance across is only ten or twelve miles, and passengers and maijs would have to be driven seven miles on this side to end from the Kent Northern Railway terminus at Richibucto, In summer time, if this route were adopted, the steamers could come to the railway wharf. Passengers from all points North and West would reach Charlottetown quicker by the way of Richibucto than by any other route. Mr. J. C.
