”Call Farm Price Support Plan Hii And Miss Affair

OTTAWA (CP)-Federal admin- istration of agricultural price sup- port legislation was described as

'a "hit-and-miss" affair in the Commons Friday-

George Nowlan (PC-Digby-An napolis-Kings) said in the throne speech debate th a government does something only under heavy pressure.

The legislation needed overhaul- ing to make it rational. effective and easily understood.

Mr. Nowlan protested delays by Agriculture Minister Gardiner in dealing with r , is by Annapolis valley apple growers for price supports.

OPPOSED TO SUPPORT.

He said Mr. Gardiner had set as a prerequisite for price supports in Nova Scotia consideration of what the reaction to such support would be in Ontario. Quebec and British Columbia which also grew apples.

Mr. Nowlan said Ontario and Quebec apple growers were op- posed to price support for Nova Scotia apples and after weeks of delay the federal decision was that there would be no support this year.

Mr. Gardiner interrupted to say the government "could not carry out the proposal they (Nova Scotla) had made."

Meanwhile. Mr. Nowlan said, Annapolis valley growers were in

the dark, not knowing whether to gather in the crop, let it rot or freeze on the ground or what Elle to do.

He said they were told by Mr- Gardiner that if the federal gov- ernment provided potato price sup ports it would also have to SWO support to Nova Scotla apple STOW" GT5.

Mr. Nowlan said he could not see the connection between apples and potatoes.

Then last week, he said. there was a federal announcement of price support for apples but he was told by growers that the as- sistance is not worth much.

(The government announced last week a minimum average price to apple producers of 45 cents a bushel for top quality fruit. It will also assist in I program to divert surplus potatoes into starch fac- tories.

Mr. Nowlan also asked the gov- ernment to lower the rates charged trucks using the ferry Bluenou which recently went into operation between Yarmouth, N. and Bar Harbor. Me.

was not built to be operated at a profit but to help Nova Scotian in- dustries ship their products by truck at low cost to New England markets.

He also expressed disappoint- ment that the government did not announce in the throne speech any plans to increase federal subsidies to universities, especially to Marl- tirne institutions.-
