That Returning Ollicer.

Str,—Mr. A. C. Shaw was transferred from St. Catherines to the more important polling division of Kingston, Mr. N. 8. Me- Kenzie being placed at St. Catherines, as

| revising officer.

The disgraceful slanders against Mr, Shaw hy the Patriot and its correspondents, are well known. The poll at Kingston was taken in & more impartial, fair and just manner, than ever betore, as expressed by one of the agents,

' But the most noticeable feature of the day

was the presence of H. J. Palmer, Esq., who won the good opinion of those present by his gentlemanly conduct, as well as by his moderation and good judgement at the close of the poll. Mr. Shaw thanked Mr. Palmer for his valuable assistance, and the other agents of both parties for the friendly and reasonable way in which they had discharged their respective duties. Mr. Palmer replied, referring to charges made against Mr, Shaw, said that the returning officers had most etliciently, fairly and impartially discharged his duties, and was thoroughly satisfied that Mr. Shaw used every effert to faithfully carry

out the law,and the statements of the facts he

would cheerfully make in vindication of the returning officer. Complimentary expressions were made by the other gentlemen who acted as agents, in approval of Mr. Shaw. Yours, ete., VOTER. Lot 31.
