LONDON, Nov. 7 —- (AP) - Hopes of flight testing by next war a giant British flying boat dc- signed to curry 100 passengers to New York at 380 miles an hour have been smashed by delay in ermine deliveries.

Builders of the MO-lon Saund- nrs-Roe "Princess" _- the world's largest commercial flying boat say its test will be delayed until 105-1 because turbo-Jet engines \vi'i not be available until April of that. year.

The Bristol Aeroplane Company, designers of the husky power- plmis. and Saunders-Roe. Limited, Jointly announced the delay.

'l‘hc British Overseas Airways Corporation has ordered three of the huge planes for non-stop use between Britain and New York. The announced delay may mean, however, that; the "Princesses". when available. may be diverted to British-South American or other routes.

"It is hoped the delay will not affect more than the starting date flight trials." a Saunders-Roe spokesman said. “It is still expect.- crl the planes will be delivered to B.O.A.C. in 1953 as scheduled."

Some observers here felt. any delay in the flying boats delivery could result in their being pushed aside in favor of Astor all-Jet land- planes.

This is possible, it. was pointed out, especially on the trans-Atlan- tic iuxury route, where the race for speed and service is bound to intensify during the next three or four years.

The moon apparently has an af- fect cn hcrring catches. There- fore. artificial light can be used to attract lhc fish.

This subject was dismissed to- day by S, N. Tibbo oi the Fisher- ies Biological Station at St. An- drews, N.B.

Mr. Tibbo said an analysis of catch records showed that the number of herring available is lowest during the weeks in which the moon is new and full and high- est during the weeks when it is in the first and third quarters.

The reason might be merely the affect of tidal currents — or it might be due to the amount of ligint coming from the moon. The next experimental ste/p was this:

"We have some experimental evidence to show that artificial light will attract or repel her- ring depending‘ on the degree of light intensity, or, in other words, the strength of the bulb and the distance that it is away from the fish.

"An experiment conducted at the biological station showed that herring were strongly attracted to light of very low intensity and that. this tendency was reduced with an increase in candle-power. Actually, a 7 1-2-watt bulb cover- ed with a dark blue glass exerted the greatest attraction. but s 60- watt bulb without any covering had the opposite effect."

This evidence has been used by fishermen to help them caioh more fish.

One method oi fishing in Japan employs a long string of lights extending out from shore. These lights can be extinguished in succession. The fish are gradually led inshore where they can be more easily taken by the fisher- men.
