GHOSTS ARE POPU LAR
They Once Mere Buenas Frequently tn Popular Current Literature, Ghosts enjoy a curious popularity in England to day. Years ago they fell in- to unmerited disfavor; and for a century and a half they battled with scant suc- cess against that arrogant wave of reason and common sense which chilled the fair fields of poetry, swept romance from the land, and left the sombre glades of superstition tenantless and bare of every horror. From time to time, indeed, the exiled ghosts, like the exiled gods of Olympus, strove to regain their lost ascendaney; but there was something pitifully valgar about their trivial triumphs. Apparitions whose modest mission was te sell a volume of dull sermons upon death, or to stir up a clamorous mob in Cock Lane, could scarcely aspire toa dignified position in the spirit world. Even their local col- oring, though it lent them a transient estimation with the public, told against them in the eud; for the city streets, and that highly vaunted bulwark of the mation, the great respectable middle class, are not harmonious accessories of the supernatural. As for the educated people. who now reverently await each mew development of the impossible, theirs was a different attituds 100 years ago. Men who read Pope and Swift and Addison, whose heads were clear. whose hearts were cold, whose faith was lim- ited, and whose digestions defied high living, could ill .attune their minds to the ‘‘dark sweet horror” of mediaeval ghostlore. ‘The deevil never appears to a man that’s no frightened afore haun out 'o his seven senses,” says the Ettrick Shepherd; and he lived in Scot- land, where skepticism failed to attain the easy suvercilious composure of her English sister; in Scotland, where the exiled fairies and witches shared with the exiled Stuarts the just affections of a loyal race. There is little doubt that Sir Waiter was secretly enamored of the supersti- tious which he affected to disregard, and which the stupid prejudices of his day would not permit him to enjoy in peace. What can be more pathetic than the contrast between his robust denials and his quick, half-smothered sympathy for all eerie things? How well he tells the tale of the apparition seen by Lord Londonderry—the naked | child who emerged from the dying em- bers of the grate, and who, like Faust’s terrible hound, increased in size as he approached the curtained and recessed bed. Lord Londonderry, Scott explains somewhat pecvishly, was the only man
| he knew to whom a veritable ghost had
ever appeared, and he is hardened with tthe conviction that it may be his duty ‘to offer some explanation of the mys tery. As for the supernatural element in his novels, it is almost always a fail- ure; not from the lack of imagination or of vivid power. for the mingled hor- wor and humar and pathos of Wander: ing Willie’s tale have never been sur- but because the atmosphere in which he lived was unfavorable to the full development of such lawless fan- cies. The White Lady of Avenel is one of the tamest spirits in all fiction. Good Protestants may have rejoiced in the soundness of her religious principles; but it is not the place of apparitions to be progressive and enlightened. If they know what is best for them they will cling to the old order, for when it passes away it takes their strongest constitu- ency along with it. I sometimes fear that modern ghosts are being lured to their destruction by the new semiscien- tific methods of research, which beguile them with a show of respect and a lit- tle worthless notoriety, but which in the end will rob them of their heritage —that shadowy power which has come down from the dim past to be bartered away at last, like Esau’s birthright, for a mess of pottage.—Agnes Repplier in Atlantic Monthly.
‘The Religion of Literary “Men, It is quite extraordinary how callous even the most religious persons in the past have often been to the miseries of their fellow-creatures, both in this world and the next. They have, indeed, ex pressed their gratitude for being safe and sound themselves, but not without a feeling of complacency that others are not so fortunate. It is this callousness which has rendered the man of letters— impulsive and sensitive, soft-hearted, yet easily moved to indignation, and charitable even toward the sins he is not inclined to—unorthodox and something more. There may bein hima want of submissiveness to the Divine will, and certainly of that unquestioning faith which is the comfort of s0 many souls, but there is no lack of human love and sympathy; andthe man who loves his fellows, we are told, is very near tc lov ing his Creator.
At all events, the feeling I have de- scribed seems to me to have more or less pervaded the minds of almost all men of letters with whom I have con- versed upen spiritual things. Because literary men are not, as a rule, church goers, they are often considered irre ligious or as complete Gallios in the matter; but this is not at all my ex- perience with them, and I have lived in their midst for nearly half a century.
A very distinguished member of the clergy used to say, with those half-shut eyes that always showed wher his vein of humor was touched, and which caused it to be said of him that he ‘never saw a happy moment.” ‘‘What strikes one as 60 queer is that belief in their particular dogma is made the es- sential point of all sects, all of which, save one—and perhaps even that—must be wrong.”
