Joun Fercuson, vagrant, took refuge in the lock-up last night, and was discharged to- day. It isa pity the authorities should allow this helpless invalid to loiter about the city. He is a sickeuing sight to all who pass him. Cannot something be done to take him off the streets ’

Propuce SHrIepMENTs.—On Wednesday last the schooner ‘‘John Franklin” cleared from Montazue for Newfoundland with a cargo con- sisting of 1182 bushels oats, 192 bushels tur- nips. On Tuesday the schooner ‘‘Hannah G” gailed from New London for St. John’s, Nfid., with 1900 bushels oats, 405 bushels barley, 600 pushels potatoes, 15 tubs butter, 16 bags

oatmeal.

Tue bargue ‘Lizzie Cameron” sailed this morning from Crapaud to load coal at Pictou for Montrea!. ‘This vessel has been in Crap- and for some days intending to load oats at that port for Great Britain, but the voyage has been abandoned. Our reporter, hearing that the voyage was abandoned, called upon the owners——-Messrs. Welsh & Owen—to learn the reason. He was informed by Mr. Owen ‘that the frvight arranged for from Montreal was much better than anything the vessel could do in taking oats from this Province, on ship's account, at the present prices.”

Tue lecture of the Rev. Jacob Freshman, on. “The Jews,’ which will be delivered in Y. M. ©. A. Hall, on Monday evening, is very highly spoken of by the press of the cities in which it has been delivered. Rev. Mr. Evans, of Fredericton, writes: ‘‘The lecture is brimful of information on a subject not often brought before our people. Ina glowing mannet the / prayers of the Jews are described. This de- cription is one of the most beautiful and elo quent parts of the lecture. Whether we con- sider the interest surrounding the subject, the method of its treatment, or the fervid elo. quence of the lecturer, it is one of the best and most useful lectures I have listened to.” His Honor Judge Hensley will preside; and it is anticipated that, as in other places, the hall here will be full.

Joun W. Maruesoy, truckman, was, to- day, arraigned before the Stipendiary Magis- trate for receiving hay on false pretences. At the market, yesterday, he pure ed a load of hay from a young man named Terrence Carrahar—a servant in the employ of Mr. Wm. Howard—and promised to pay him in cash when the hay would be stored. UCarra- har immediately stored the hay in Matheson’s barn, and on demanding bis money, Matheson told him to ‘“‘go to h—1l and getit.” The young man remonstrated with him, but getting po satisfaction, he made complaint at the Court, and Matheson was arrested. He de- nied the charge at the Court this morning, and said he bought the hay on sonse condition made between Dr. Creamer and Carrahar’s master— **g condition” which was, no doubt, of Mathe- son’s own invention. The Magistrate warned him that if he again appeared on a like charge he would fine him heavily. ‘his time he or- dered him to return the hay to Carrahar, and pay him 60 cents for his trouble, besides 75 cents Court expenses.

THomAs ExmMan AND James Farapy, two noted thieves, were arrested by the police on Thursday evening. There is a batch of com- plaints against each, and they have alluded the vigilance of the police for months. Enman bas often relieved the clothes-lines of the east and north-ends of the city of their bur- dens, and committed many other larcenies. Farady has stolen more or less from the Gas Works, For some motive they disguised them- selves on “‘hursday evening, about seven o'clock, and passed the police station. The City Marsha! detected them and sent officers Cameron and Bradley in pursuit. Officer Cameron discharged his revolver in the air; and Farady, thinking it was at him, jumped ever the fence in front of Mrs. Alexander’s residence and hid. He was soon captured by officer Bradley. Enman turned up Pownal street. At the corner of Grafton and Pownal Streets o‘ficer Cameren discharged the second shot in the air; but it failed to daunt Enman, and he contined his fiight. When opposite the Convent the officer threatened to shoot him if he would not surrender. Enman, on hearing the threat, immediately stopped ant returned to the station with the officer.
