"The 40-hour week leaves nte mid; perhaps it is because I was born on a farm," said Mr. A. M. MacKay. president of the Islgnd Telephone Company, when he ap- peared before the Public Utility Commission yesterday as it heard the request of Local Union 1811 of the Brotherhood of Electrical workers for a raise in pay and a 40-hour week.

Mr. Macxay went on to say he could sympathize with an employee who maintained he was not mak- ing a living wage, but had no sym- pathy for an employee who says that (4 hours is too long for him to work.

Conservative leaders are report- ed confident they will defeat the move through their over-all mai- ority of 18 seats in the House of Commons. A Labor victory would mean the downfall of Churchill's administration.

The Conservatives are bracing themselves to meet a storm of criticism against: Colonial Secretary Oliver Lyttelton when the censure motion comes up for debate next Wednesday or Thursday.

Their attack probably will centre on Lyttelton's ousie last. month of the kabaka (kin) of Buganda province. whose young wife has appealed directly to Queen Eliza- beth to end her husband's exile.

0'I'TAWA,. Dec. 10 (Special)- Nuniber of visitors to Prince Ed- ward Island National Park hi 1952-53 was. .l22.29Q. In' increase of 14.309 over. the previous year, according to the annual report of the Department of Resources and Development tabled in the House of Commons today by Resources Minister Jean Lesage.

The increase is attributed in part to the advertising of Can- ndn's National Parks in United States media and partly to the improvements in both transpor- tation and accommodation made in the past two seasons. The Prince Edward Island National Park is one of the four in which there have been no fire losses in the past two years. It was also one of the two national parks to he visited by His Excellency the Governor-General.

A major improvement in the P. E. I. fork was the laying of an asphalt-bound atone chip sur- face on the section of the coastal road between Rustico and New London Bay, there are 12 miles of first-class roads in the park. 2.5 miles of secondary roads and ,.'l.5 miles of trails. Accommodation was augmented by the construc- tion of five modern cabins on a suitable site within the park and by the laying of a new roof on Dnlvay house. New kitchen shel- ters were built. at Cove-head and Stanhope.

Among other activities, lim- nologists of the department made an intensive field investigation of the birds of Prince Edward is- land. the iirst.completc survey of its kind to be made in the Prov- ince. The report oi this study is now in preparation.

While New Brunswick is not Canada's largest potato producer. the annual crop being well below that of Ontario or Quebec, it produces more for sale outside its boundaries than any other prov- ince and has it large interest in the U. S. market.

Pool Market Plan

The official said that the New Brunswick potato marketing board was polling growers as to whether they wished to accept an offer of the federal government to set up a pool marketing sys- tem similsr to that in effect in Prince Edward Island. Under the agreement. growers joining the plan would sell through the pool. with the federal government,mak- ing up the difference at the end of the season if the tubers failed to return prevlouslyc agreed prices. For N. B. growers. if suf- ficient numbers accept the plan. the prices this year would be 40 cents a bushel for potatoes sold up to Jan. 1, 50 cents to March and 56 cents after that.

He said there was already a duty on Canadian potatoes sold in the United States. Under a: quote system based on the U. S.l crop, there was a duty of 37 V2 cents per hunrireriwelght, within the quota, doubled to '75 cents after the quotas for seed and table stock had been filled. On the other hand, only early U.
