Increased Liquor Prices

"The Dominion," Premier Camp- bell continued, "has selected as the basic period the year ending 30 June, 1942, and has offered w the provinces to guarantee the BTW" inceg the revenue which they row ceived from those sources during that period. The condition of the offer is that the provinces absorb a $2.00 per goof gallon increase in the Domin n tax and add that to the retail prices of liquor sold by the provinces; and that in ad- d tlon the rovinces impose anoth- er provinc a1 increase to the rc- tail sales in a similar amount. So that the increase of retail prices in the provinces must be sufficient to absorb a combined tax of $4.00 per Aproor gallon. Old Age Pensions

He understood that with this payment the San- atorlum Commission has been able to show a surplus during the past year. This arose in reality from the inability of the institution to obtain replacements of equipment. The Commission therefore made a proposal which the government considers reasonable, that the sur- plus from last year's operations be set aside in a special fund design- ed to enable the Commission, after- the war, to restore and improve the condition of their equipment.

The estimate for grants to Hos- pitals is increased to $20,300 for the current year.

There is a new item in public health services of a nutrition pro- gramme, $500; and another item of physical fitness programme, $500.

The salary of the food inspector is increased by $180, the arrange- ment being that in future he will inspect all meat supplied to Fal- conwood Hospital and also inspect and supervise the sanitary condi- tiflns of the dairy and milk sup- D 6S

For extra mural treatment ‘of tuberculosis on M11011 over $7.000 was spent last year, the estimate had been increased to $11,000

Teachers’ salaries and supple- ments amlncreasedfrom $274,000 to $296,000, reflecting the first full years’ operation of the new stami- ards of teachers’ salaries.

The schcol book subverition of $2.500 is continued. This has ensh- led the school supply department not only to reduce substantially the prices charged for primary school books as against previous years, but also to absorb a substan- tial increase which would other- wise have to be made in the price of those books. The Minister of Ed- ucation will outline a proposal which he is making for the exten- sion of this plan of subventions for the purpose of further reducing school book prices.
