Services yesterday at Holy Re- deemer Church were largely attend- mi. Masses were at the usual Sun- day hours. Rev. Charles O'Hara. 0.88.114... celebrated High Mass at 10:30. The speaker at all the Mass- es was Revzw. E. Enright, USSR... his sermon being the first of a series of dissertations dealing with the "Apostles Creed. The Men's Choir rendered the singing, Mr. Alfred Douoette presiding at. the organ.

Sunday School was held for all the children in the afternoon.

Rev. Father OHara preached a Very enlightening semen in the evening. He dealt with the Church Feast of the Epiphany, explaining the history and circumstances of the Feast. Vespers were also chanted. The service closed with Benediction of the Most Blessed Sacrament.

The death of Archbishop O'Don- nell of Halifax gives timely inter- est to the following information from the current issue of The New Freeman: It was in the "forties" of the last century that the division of the Maritlmes into several (Rom- an Catholic) Dioceses took place. In the year 1817 the Vicar-late- Apostolic of Nova Scotia. had been erected and the See of Charlotte- town, cieated in 1828, included the Province of New Brunswick. The Diocese of Halifax came into being in February of 1542, L‘ it the -‘ oldest in the Maritirues and in September of the same year New Brunswick became a separate Sea. In 1844 the Diocese of Arichat, now Antigonish, was erected and in 1880 New Bruns- wick was divided into the Sees of Saint John and Chatham. The Archdiocue of Halifax oom- prises all but three counties of the Province of Nova Scotia. also the Bermuda. Island. In 1817 it was the Vicariate-Apostollc of Nova Scotia and 1842 was created into the Diocese of Halifax and be- came an Archdiocese on May i, 1852. Rt. Rev. Edmund Burke was its first Bishop, being consecrated in 1818 as Vicar Apostolic of Nova Scotia and died in 1820. Rt. Rev. William Fraser was consecrated Bishop of Tones in 1825 and Bish- op of Halifax, its first as a diocese, in 1842. He was transferred to Arichat, now the diocese of Antig- onish. in 181i, and died in 1851. In 1842 Rt. Rev- William Walsh, D. D., was consecrated ooodjutor Bishop of Halifax and succeeded Bishop Fraser on the latter being transferred. as Bishop in 1844. Be was created an Archbishop in 1852, and died in 1858. His successor was‘ Rt. Rev. Thomas Connolly, 0. B. F» D. D., Bishop of New Brunswick, with residence at Saint John, who was promoted to be Archbishop of Halifax in 1859. Archbishop Cori- nolly oiled in 1870. He was sucoead- ed by Most Rev. Michael Hannah. who was consecrated in 1877, and who died in i883. Most Rev. Cor- nelius O'Brien then became Arch- bishop of i-iallfax. being consecrat- ed in 1883. Archbishop O'Brien died in 1806 and was succeeded by Archbishop McCarthy, who was consecrated September I, 1805. He died in 1881. ' Archbishop McCarthy was the first native born Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Halifax.

Mr. Shepherd's paper followed; He dealt altogether with present day singing and singers and modern methods, pointing out. that English ‘views are a trifle divergent to Can- adian and American views.

There are two classes of singers. those who sing for pleasure and those who sing for a threes. "Sing- ing derlves its power from nature but owes its perfection to art."- this is a fact often forgotten. Only those willing to work very "hard should be encouraged to attempt the art of singing. The great sing- e: Patti in her memoirs has said, "We artists will be still learning when we are too old to sing." But there is no doubt that the stand- ard of amateur singing has im- proved enormously in recent years.
