Can you or any o our readers find a parallel to it in gli histery? ‘The nearest approach to a parailel consists in certain passages in Mr. Gladstone’s own career; it would be vain to searc in other directions.

The Toronto AZail says :--

‘‘The debt of the Province, including the loan recently negotiated tn France by M. Wurteleg amounts to $15,000,000, nearly all ef which has been sunk in the North Shore railway. ‘This entails an anual in- terest payment of $750,000, and as the or- dinary expendiinre reaches $2,200,000, the gross annual outlay is close upon $3,000,- The receipts fall far short of this. The Federal subsidy is $960,000, the Crown Land revenue $420,000, and the other items of income amount in round numbers to $650,000, making the total income less than $2,100,000, and leaving a deficit of $900,000 a year.”—Which shows a very serious outlook, without doubt.
