Drops Dead While Curling

ANTIGONISH, Jah. L-Wllilam Porlcy Cunningham, prominent bus- lncss man of Antigontsh, dropped dead this afternoon at 3.30 while engaged in n friendly game of curi- ing at the rink.

Mr. Cunningham had just thrown a stone and was walking down the lcc when he was sccn to fall. Four medical men were amongst the play- ers and he was immediately carried to the club rooms whcrc every cf- fort was made at resucitation but all proved unavailable. ‘

The late Mr. Cunningham was born in Antigonish seventy-three years ago, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Cunningham. When a Young man he went West, where for a time he served as assistant en- gineer in the construction of the C. ‘P. R.

Progress Means Unwelcome Change For Navy Islanders

(BY the Canadian Press)-On the wes- tern shore of Saint John Harbor workmen are tolling to complete ‘a gigantic engineering project, ul- ltra-modern in construction and beyond the scope of "any similar feat undertaken by man. A lit-tic community. scarcely changed since its early days as the nucleus of Saint John's civilization, exists a few feet from thc scone of this waterfront activity. As they watch the progress mrd- ln work of 8X- cavatlon and construction, the lit- tle group of dwellers are wonder- ing how long they will retain res- idence on the site occupied by gen- erations of their fam'lics.

The engineering project, a coffcr dam.‘ bars the harbor waters and tides while piers are constructed within the protecting wall, elim- inating submirifie work, Earth and rock have been excavated to a depth of thirty five feet low water and fifty five feet low- cr than high tide.

Huddling nearby is a tiny 81'0"? of unpretentious dwellings. Their location is known as Navy Island. Since work on the dam stlrted. the small. jutting area was given s land connection with the shore- line’. Formerly it was an island, sep- arated from shore by 200 yards oi water.

Although Saint John had the origin of its settlement on Nivy Island, as the years named, this ‘section continued its life apart from the city proper. ‘The handful of residents sought its livelihood from the sea, and some came into the city only once or twice a year. Suoeeding generations have con- tinued the separate existence.

Now the barrier of water is re- moved. Modem fscflltlcs demand enpiinsion. A little group of self- sufllcient folk await the apparent- ly inevitable termination to en eti- lstenoe as lived by their ancestors for generations back.

His whole life's work was done through the medium of daily journ- alism, a wearing, tearing life of

He ate a break- fast of raw fruit and worked at home during the afternoon, and at night at thc Guardian oflicem He often "saw his paper to bed" as if it were a child of his blood, and then went home to a supper also, mainly of raw fruit. Those who were close to him slid they never knew a happier man.

In a tribute to Scott last night Arthur Mann, editor of the York- shire Post, said:

"By the death of Scott we lose the most distinguished figure in Brit- ish journalism of modern times."

Three of his yachts were defend- ants of the America's Cup, the trophy for which the late Sir Tho- mas Lipton tried so many times without success to win‘.

The Bohemian life of the Paris art

colony is said to be frankly and truly pictured in Constance Ben- nett's new RKO Paths starring film, "The Common Law". now playing at the Prince Edward Theatre.

The action of the story unfolds against the glittering background of the Paris Latin Quarter and its stu- dios, with the star portraying n model who poses for a young Amer- ican painter.

Many of the scenes are played in a typical Paris studio, said to be ‘authentic in every detail, while other laction shows the world's most col- orful revel. The Four Arts Ball. in full swing. Five hundred players tuk" part in the ball’ sequence, ninety- four of them beautiful girls costum- ed in audacious outfits patterned after those worn by models at the Paris festival.

‘girl who has late 1931 ideas about love and marriage and a single standard of morals for men and women. The story has the Paris art colony as a background.

John Farrow is the author who is to be given the credit for bringing the long popular Chambers‘ novel up to date for the screen. His story, while modernized, retains the fun- damental theme and situation of the original story.
