I'd like to thank you folks for showing up and listening to what I, actually we, all the staff have to say. We realize that a lot of you haven't been too happy with the service that's been provided lately, but we're here to fix that. My name is Sean Brady and I'm the new Managing Editor at The Cadre. I'm a married, 25-year-old, third year Computer Science stu- dent who did two years of Business Administration before switching majors. I started here in 2001 when, as I like to put it, I had my

mid-life crisis about 20 years early:

after 5 years in the dining industry from Chef to Manager, I decided I was burnt out on kitchens and hated my job.

Now, let me introduce you to everyone. * Drum roll please...* As Copy Editor we have Aimee Arsenault. Misplaced modifiers have nowhere to run when she's on the job.

As Production Manager, Rebecca Shorten is pulling the all- nighters trying to get to print. Helping to finance this paper empire, we have Matthew O'Halloran as Advertising Manager. Our Editors, Alec O'Hanley, Nick Stewart, and Steve McManus are helping making sure the paper has what you want included in it, and our Reporters, Ryan Gallant, Allan Manley, Joel Gillespie, Rob MacPherson, Dave Neatby, and Jonathan Smith (gra- ciously returning from a brief

retirement) are telling you what you want to know.

So I guess you're all won- dering how we're going to win over your support. Well, there have been some policies drawn up. Now I know you all think, given the recent contract negations around here, that the last thing we need are any more policies. Well, normally I'd be the type of person to agree with you; however, I've read these and they're pretty good. Rather than bore you with details like notes in a lecture let me give you the highlights...

First, we're going to con- centrate on news and information a little more. Humour and opinion submissions will still play a big role, just not the dominant one. Secondly, letters to the editor should not exceed 350 words. We want to try to give as many people as possible the chance to be heard. On that note, for the same reason, opinion pieces should top off at 700 words. Finally, while we want to be pushing the boundaries and effecting change, we can be contro- versial without being offensive. Profanity does not influence -- it irritates -- so to avoid that, submis- sions may be toned down before

‘going to print.

Now, before I go, there are a couple of other things I want to let everyone know. First, we have a new e-mail address for general submissions: upeipapertrail@hot- mail.com . Second, as a part of our retooling around here and in an effort to allow everyone to be involved, we've decided to hold a contest to rename the paper. Happy with The Cadre? Or would you like to see The Faction make a return as

our namesake? Submit your sug- gestion to namethatpaper@hot- mail.com. We will compile entries until the publication of our fifth issue of the semester, at which point our crack staff will reduce the list to roughly 10-15 names, depending on the quantity of entries. This shortlist will be pre- sented in our March 22 issue from which readers will vote to select a winner. The winning name will become the paper's new title begin- ning next year (subject to Board of Directors approval of course).

In conclusion, I would like to welcome you all to sit in on some of our meetings, which are normally held Monday afternoons at 4:30pm - eat, drink, be merry - and while you're with us it would be great if you could contribute

_ some interesting article ideas.
