STD's and what you should know

STDs: The Sexually Transmitted Diseases

-- STDs are the infections passed from person to person in male semen or female vagi- nal fluids (or, in some instances, even blood) during acts of vaginal, anal, or oral Sex.

-- Most STDs can be cured. Others can be controlled.

-- According to the World Health Organization, STDsare SPREADING especially true for people between 15 and 29 years old.

-- If you have an STD, it’s almost certain your partners have it and need treatment too. And the sooner you both get treatment, the better its chances of success.

-- If you have an STD, fol- low your doctor’s advice. Af- ter completing your treatment, always have _ a second test to make sure that the treat- ment was successful.

-- The more people you have unprotected sex with, the higher your risk of acquiring a sexually transmitted disease. However, you don’t have to “sleep around” to getan STD. In fact, you could have sex with only | person and still get infected because all of that person’s previous part- ners (and their partners) can pass it along to a

-- STDs are sharp thorns indeed, and there are large patches of them in our sexual landscape. 1 person in 20 will catch an STD this year. 1 person in 4 will catch one between the ages of 15 and 55.

Condoms

-- Latex condoms are thin, sensitive, and simple to use. Avoid handling condoms roughly though, __ since this may puncture them. And DON’T use oil based lubri- cants like petroleum jelly or baby oil because they can weaken the latex the condom is made of. If additional lubri-

cation is required, ask a health professional for the name ofanon-petroleum based lubricant.

-- Always remember to use a condom before any type of sexual contact. And never reuse a condom.
