Sixty branches of the Irish National League are already formed in Ulster. The Irish machinery is every- where preparing for the next general election.

—Here is a story told by the Pictorial World: A big block of buildings falling into decay was offered for sale. A person officially connected with the parish drew the attention of the sanitary officers to them, and had them eondemn- ed as unfit for habitation. Directly this was done, the same individual, in con- junction with a firm of speculators, bought the property for a bagatelle—for old building material, in fact. But new proprietors didn’t pull it down—not they. They gave a coat of whitewash here and there, and let every siugle room again, directly, at increased rentals, and every single room is full of rate-payers now. The heuses which were con- demned five years ago have been a litile gold mive to the very people who insist- ed on ealling the attention of the sanitary authorities to them! It is needless to add that the same attention has vever been solicited since. It seems that almost anything will bring a high rent jn London, as « large part of the poorer- built quaiters have been demolished for Riilway and other public purposes, thus overcrowdily the districts untouched.

The Bank of Nova Scotia.

| EXPLANATIONS BY OFPICIALS—MEETING JOURNED TO SEPTEMBER 11Tu.

There was a very small attendance at the meeting of shareholders of the Bank of Nova Scotia on Thursday last. Mr. Doull, the acting president, explained the object of the meeting, and that, as the arrange- ments were not completed, it would be necessary to adjourn the meeting to a sub- sequent date; and it was accordingly after- wards adjourned till the Ist September. Referring to the reported losses of the Bank by the Shaw failure, he said they were very much exaggerated. Any loss the Bank would, or could meet with would be very insignificant. Mr. Doull did not mea- tion the amount in which the Bank was involved, nor did he consider it expedient to go into details. Cashier Fyshe stated that a cash offer had been made the Bank, which they could accept without infringing in the least upon the Bank’s rest or divi- dend, or on their business generally. No- body asked what that cash offer was. In reply to a question as to why the Bank did not accept it, he said it was becauss the Bank expected io do much better. Those present appeared to be satisfied with the explanation.

Shot Through the Heart.

A terrible murder occurred on the streets of Toronto on Thursday night. It seems that two men named Charles Andrews and Tom Marmey had a few words of dispute, when the former drew a revolver and shot Marmey through the heart. Constable Cuddy heard the shot, and running forward was in time to see Andrews running away. He chased him into alane and Andrews fired again, the bullet going through the | skirt of the policeman’s coat, but not injur- ing him. The constable ran in on him and ;caught him by the throat, when Andrews tired again, the ball this treme going between Cuddy’s legs. Cuddy got hold of the weapon and wrested it from his assailant and brought him to No.1 police head- quarters, Andrews was in the horrors at | he time, and does not seem conscious of | the enormity of his crime. He is a newly larrived English immigrant and about | thirty years of age. The man Marmey died |}without a struggle, and his body was brought home with the murderer. Charles Andrews alias Morgan was brought up in | the police court, pleaded not guilty and | was remanded till the 15th. He was one of a gang who fired on the police at Sand- ,wich and is a tough of the first water. He jhas been on a spree fur along time and ended by the murder, When he was being jremoved from the the residence of the mar- | dered man, Marmey, an attempt was made to lynch him. One man succeeded im |reaching the hack, and made an effort to | shoot, but was prevented by the police, The constables were called ont from the | Central Station, and the murderer was, witha special gnard, conveyed to the jail. | The murderer is said to be one of a Detriot igang of roughs that recently crossed into ' Sandwich and shot several residents. Public feeling is strong against him.

The commander of the British forces in Egypt, advises that there have been no fresh cases of cholera among soldiers since |the last report, and that the soldiers are | doing well.

Lonpon, Aug. 11 | There were twenty-two deaths from cholera in Alexandria yesterday.

The deaths from Cholera in Egypt to date have been 16,448, of which 6,366 persons died in Cairo. There is a report of Carbun- cular Plague at Damietta.

A serious monetary crisis prevails in San Domingo. Congress has imposed an import duty of twelve per cent. on Mexican silver.

The London Times correspondent at Hon Kong says he has been informed that there are no chinese troops either in Tonquin or on the frontier, but the garrisons in the provinces of Yun Nan and Kwang Si have been secretly increased. Much grain and rice are being stored at Canton. The im- pression prevails that the Chinese are playing a waiting game which is costing the French much and Chinese liitle.

The country around Port au Prince, W. L.,is in a very agitated condition. A re- volution is momentarily expected in that city. The government is penniless and business is at a stand still. The town of Jacmel has pronounced in favor of a revo- lution and a pronunciamento is expected at Cape Haytien. A great battle has been fought before Jeremie, in which the Government troops were completely defeated and several of their generals w>re taken and executed. The. revolutionists are marching on Leogone. The Govern- ment is, therefore, raising the siege of Merigoane and covering Port Au Prince, at ‘its headquarters at Leognoe.

Sir Henry Tyler, M. P., the President of the Grand Trunk Railway, in personal ap- pearance ig a thorough type of an English ventleman, along, flewing beard betokens the frost of age, while a vigorous, well-knit frame, clear complexion and bright eyes, indicate the prime of life emphatically. One would take him at first sight for an English savant or litterateur rather than a practical railway man, but this impression is quickly dispelled in conversation. A railway philosopher would perhaps fit him more exactly if he required another name.

Lord Landsdowne has been banqnetted by his political friends. He is expected in Canada late in October. Lord and Lady Melgund precede the vice-regal party by a fortnight. Lord Landsdowne’s stnd of hunters and carriage horses were sold at Tattenall’s the other day. The Marchion ess's famous team of park ponies brought $1,200. It is said that the young duchess of Mariborough will accompany her elder sister, the Marchioness of Landsdowne. It now turns out that she takes the title of Duchess, notwithstanding separation
