known for some time. The United States treasury about a year ago let it be known that substantial transfers of assets had already been made chiefly from Germany Spain, Sweden and Switzerland. It was then thought possible that more than $100 million! of such money might actually have been deposit- ed in the United States under the cloak of some neutral nominee.

At Bretton Woods a special committee was appointed to study this matter. Itrecommend- ed that the United Nations jointly demand of neutral governments and banks that they take steps tn impound assets stolen by the Axis and transferred to them. Committees of the United Nations have also been busy and much informa- tion has been gathered. Most, if not all, of the United Nations are now following a course similar to that recently announced at Ottawa. Btrt while it is relatively simple to keep an eye out for stolen gold, it is much more difficult to track down securities and bank balances.

The recommendations of an Agricultural Commission of Inquiry have been tabled in the Ontario Legislature and should prove of value and interest to every Province where farming is a basic industry.

The idca of such a commission, non-parti- san, its members selected by the farmers, to study the various sides of the farming industry, originated with Premier Drew, and was strong- ly supported by Agriculture Minister Kennedy. It was tire first effort of the kind made in Ont- ario, or in Canada, to get at the root of farm troubles in this way. Chairman Archibald Leitch was well qualified for the post he held, as he was formerly head of the Farm Economic Division at the Ontario Agricultural College and one-time professor of animal husbandry. Most of the members were active farmers represent- ing diversified interests. ‘

The findings, following hearings in all parts of the Province, are intended to furnish the basis for legislation. While dealing with the problems of each branch of the industry, they recognize the welfare of it as a whole. The scope is shmrn by the subjects studied. These refcr to rural education, improved pro- vision fcr farm credit, soil conservation assist- _ ance and research, increased aid for the live-

stock industry, appointment of a Deputy Min- ' ister of Agriculture for New Ontario who will reside and work among the settlers in that reg- ion, s new live stock policy aimed principally at elimination of undesirable sires and their re- placement by purebred stock, financial aid to help fgrrners acquire pedigreed sires, expansion of the bacon-hog policy, greater encouragement for sheep raising, veterinary services in remote sections of the Province, improved water sup- ply, agricultural credits, the diversion of tim- ber and mineral revenues for the agricultural development of Northern ‘Ontario, enlargement _ of marketing facilities, extension 0f Hydro- ‘: electric systems, the establishment of composite high schools for the North country, payment ‘ of hog subsidies and continuation of the two- Ii year bacon contracts, licensing of live stock truckers, and the establishment of a depart- ment to study soil conservation.
