He used a National Guard air- plane to fly to Atlanta, Ga., to pick up some entertainers for a party he gave for legislators. The air force was asked for an in- vestigation to find out by what au- thority Long used an air force plane for this errand.

Tired and 63, he outdid himself during the biennial fiscal session of the législature—even for a life filled with political and personal strife. The bomb blew when the legislature rebuffed his bill to block a voter purge by segrega- tion leaders. Earl Long doesn’t take kindly to rebuffs, never has.

So, on Monday, May 25, he called g midnight press confer- ence. Among other things during a three-hour session, the gover- nor flayed his enemies hide and hoof in the free-wheeling profan- ity Louisiana had come to expect from ‘Ole Earl.” He also called

The next day, Long showed up in a packed committee room hearing voter registration bills. He heckled witnesses unmerci- fully and profanely, finally grab- bed a microphone and shouted:

“About 1908 or 1906, I had an uncle killed. He got drunk one night and went down to the col- ored quarters in Winnfield. He kriocked a nigger man out of bed and got in with his woman. The nigger man came back and shot him ”

“APOLOGIZES TO CHILDREN

That was a sample. Curses flowed. Finally, at the urging of aides, he stepped up to apologize to school children at the hearing.

“TI sent for my. Bible and I’m going to swear off cussing,”’ he said. ‘‘Let’s you and I and the good nuns keep from cussing as long as possible.”

The next day, Long told legis- lative leaders he wanted to apol- ogize publicly. The apology turned into a tirade, leaving two legislators in tears. The legisla- ture banned cameras but the governor bought radio time for a state-wide broadcast.

A cousin, Dr. Arthur Long, drugged the governor. Orderlies from a state mental hospital, a state labor leader, and a couple of state officials held the gover- nor on a stretcher and Maj.-Gen. Raymond Hofft, Louisiana’ ad- jutant-general, flew the party to John Sealy Hospital in Galveston, Tex.
