The judge, John Maloney, manager of the Hudson's Bay Company at Montreal, is one

of tho most experienced fur men in America. He served his ap- prenticeship with Revlilon Freros, whose fur activities commenced in 1728. They had posts in the north and various other parts of Canada and were worthy competitors of the Hudson's Bay Compatiy, estab- lished in 1672.

Revillon Freres also had retail establishments in New York, Lon- don and Paris and in those stores the very finest furs in the world could be found. They catered to the exclusive trade—royalty, the nobility and the wealthiest fam- ilies. Years ago the Hudson's Bay Company purchased half the stock in Reviilon Frercs and they car- ried on very amicably together, Rcvilion Frcres retiring from most of their posts if not all of them, and conducting the retail estab- lishments. They became very large buyers of high quality furs at Hud- s0n'| Bay Company's auctions and eisewhem.

The writer remembers in 1927 and subsequent years when with W. Chester S. McLure we attended the Hudson's Bay Company's auctions Ill London, many of the best of otir island silver foxes were sold to Rovilioit Freres. Well. it was with this great firm that Mr. Mal- oney got his insight and training arid later on transferred his allegi- ance to the litidson's Bay Com- pany. It was a pleasure to see him pick up a mink in cage and scan it in the various shades oi iigltt to determine its qtiality. Duo to Walter Shaw and his ef- ficient staff the arrangements for compiling data on both mink and foxes were perfect and not a single mistake was made. Fifteen min- utes after the show was over the entire prize list was ready for the papers and fur magazines.

'Women's Wear Daily shows a good picture of movie actress Greer Garsotkwearing a patina stole. It is waist length, capelet back and panel front styling. Women's Wear states that Miss Gurson‘s choice of a piatina fox contrasts with the mink and ermine majority. Her black velvet dinner suit is worn with a bead-embroidered white satin blouse. The above capclet will be worn by her in Lawrence Oilvier's Hamlet, a Universal Na- tional release.

polnted out that prices at the Nov 8th auction held by his company for the account ofllerbert A. Nie- man & Co., were 15% higher than the October sale for the same IIC~ count. At this sale 12,800 pelts were 100% sold and attendance was quite good. “What impresses me even more, however." said he.

not attended our fox sales for sev- eral seasons, notably. B. Wollman 8r Bros., one of the \veil known houses which purchased better grade pelts." Mr. Cantor also mcti- tioncd recent reports from Paris that designers there are showing renewed interest in the long-hair- ed furs, especially silver fox. Such interest, said he, should help im- prove the style position of foxes.

Regarding the above favorable statement by Mr. Cantor, it may be mentioned that a 15% advance in price would not carry the Nie- man pelts very far. On the pre vious sale to the Nov. 8th vendue the majority of the pelts sold tn the $6 to $11 categories. and proh- abiy the whole collection would not average S15. But still it is encour- aging to see the big shots becont- ing interested again and if as we have often said, the market could be cleared of the pelts now un- sold it ntight-rbe due for a substan- tial rise ln 1949. We have heard from two sources that Australians were interested in buying a quatt tity of Canadian fox pelts at the last Montreal sale, but arrange- ments could not be made to gct. Australian funds transferred to Canada. There are other markets such as South Africa, Mexico and the Argentine that would be buyers if currency restrictions were not so tough. It is a sad fact that silver fox, once the queen of furs, hus had to take such a beating at a time when money was never so plentiful or so freely spent in the United States or Canada.

Mr. Cecil Johnston of the Hud- son's Bay Company, who was pres ent at the banquet of the fur breeders held on Tuesday evening. stated to the writer that he was misquoted in a despatch from Am- herst where he judged the mink The number of foxes unsold, said he, should have been 25, . not $5,000; Mr. Johnston was t e judge of mink at tho Lawrencetown. N.S. show on Thursday and Friday. One of the exhibitors at this show was Lowell W. Hancock, who chartered a plane from Paul Sharpe and flew from Summerside early Thursday morning for Latvreneetown with 12 mink as an exhibit. Can't: beat Lowell!

Harry Rich. president and man- ager of the Maritime Fur Pool Ltd, Moncton, was a visitor to tho Fox and Mink Show early thi: week. Mr. Rich lo of the opinion that if currency difficulties could be over- come there would be an immediate improvement in demand and price for silver fox furs. Mr. Rich was for years one of the largest oper- ator: in sliver fox in the Domin- ion.’ Ho has always kept the con- fidence of his client: and his com- pany is still a big factor in the fui industry. THE ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK

his is the last of our Buteon- inc hawks, and it. appears in. the 1916 list. vouched for by John Maoswatn, m accomplished nat- uralist of a generation ago. It i: a largo and powerful hawk. but it does not. use its strength to the injury of our poultry. as does the Goshawk. Its principal food in its northern range ls the tempting, while tnioc and meadow mice pro- vide food tn the south. Rabbits are eaten where tihey are abundant. and large insects, grasshoppers and so on. add variety to its diet. Other birds are seldom killed.

As to ‘range, this hawk nests in the far north ranging from the Aleutian Islands to Northern Quebec, thence south to‘ Alberta. and Newfoundland. Ln winter its most southern range is from South California to North Carolina.

There is a very considerable var- iation of coloring among the Rough-legs. There are light phases. intermediates, and dark phases. individuals of the dark phase type are black. lacking the wihite itt- the base of the tail, hut show- ing some white while flying. The intermediates have a. light-colored belly instead of the usual dark colors.

The Rough-leg gets its name from the heavy coating of feath- ers that extends down to the base 0i its toes. These "leggings" help it to stand the severe cold of its northern range. '

American Rough-legged Hawk. AOU 347A. Adult plumage, lig-ht phase: head, neck and breast grayish white more or less streak- ed dusky. Eies brown. Back and wings brown, irregularly varied with white, dusky, or rufous. Ease of tail and upper tail covet-ts. white; rest of the tall lighter brown, barred near the end. with black. Under-parts varying from white to buffy. streaked and spot.- ted black, these markings united to form a dark abdominal zone. Legs feathered.

Dark phase: entirely dusky or even black, but usually showing a good deal of white below when flying. Length of adult. 22 inches.

THE BIRDS I'VE SEEN _

Up to twenty years ago I gave very little attention to bird life. My hobby was plant life in all its branches, from the lowly fungus to the majestic oak. and I classl- fled, sketched. and even attempt- ed to point, the specimens that I came across. But one day, I think i: was in the summer of i929. while in the City, I met a. well- known and respected citizen who was carrying a large white bird in a parcel cf rather open character. Taking my courage in botih hands (as the Parlsians saysl, I asked him what he had there? To which he replied. "a gannet", and further remarked that this bird had dived into a. fisher-man's net. became entangled, and perished. He was going to stuff it, he said: and I knew he was noted for his skill in that art. That chance encoun- ter. however, seems to have been a turning point. for I immediately bought a copy of Reed's "Bird Guide" to the eastern sea-birds. so that I might study up on the annet! I soon found that. there was a wide circle of bird-watchers on the Island, and I ultimately became as enthusiastic as any. When I commenced this column. there was an immediate response from correspondents who desired to have birds identified.
