Ir is curious now to read in the Irish records of March, 1783: ‘* Two hundred families from the County Meath, weary of dragging out an existenve in cold, hunger, and wretchedness, are determined to em , fully convinced that if they do not better themselves, they cannot be worse. The Lord Lieutenant, justly sensible of this alarming event, has, we hear, represented this matter to his Majesty’s Min- ister, and recommended an immediate session of the Irish Parliament, that something may be devised to check, in its infancy, this im- pending calamity.”

Tue Toronto Globe says: ‘* The weather in the Prairie Province is favorable for the crops aud the outlook is promising. There is much activity in building operations, but not nearly enough of lumber to supply the demand. The cost of living has continued to increase, and the prices paid for articles of food, for rent of rooms or houses, ete., are almost fabal- ous. The chief feature of the season is the steady immigration flow, and in connection with it the temporary suburbs which have grown up of canvas tents, in which over three thousand persons are living. Activity in real estate has commenced, and several lots on which to erect business establishments have been purchased this spring, mainly by immi- grants of means.
A Woman Burvev.—A report has been received at Quebec of a horrible case of fatal burning at Levis. The victim is a Mrs. Widow Fortin, a sick nurse lately in the employ of Mrs. Powell, of that place. The unfortunaae woman was heating some milk with a spirit lamp, when imprudently placing the alcohol too near the lamp it took fire in the bottle, which exploded, sending the burning liquid all over her clothing. Before the flames could be ex- tinguished the poor woman was burned almost to a crisp. Her skin and hair fell off, and her body is reported to have been a terrible sight. She was conveyed to her home. Medical attendance was im- mediviely summoned, but the doctors deny the possibility of the poor creatures re- covery. Her death will leave orphans two children, one sven and the other ten years of age.

A Mystery of THE Sea.—A Grand Manan correspendent of the St. John News gives the following account of a mysterious wreck on the Old Sroprietor Ledge, and says :— While fishiag near the Old Proprietor Ledge last Wednesday, the men saw near the rock what looked like three poles with their tops a short distance above the surface of the water. On rowing up they found the three poles to be masts of a large square-rigged vessel,
the J but whether a ship or a barque they vere not able to tell. They brought away with them
a piece of wire rigging sixty feet long, evi dently a jib stay. The vessel has evidently lain there some weeks, as sea weed has be- n to form on the masts. A number of boats et since been to the spot, but nothing has been found to show how or when she came there. By her position it 1s thought she was inward bound. The Old Proprietor is a dangerous rock some six or seven miles to the pee of Grand Manan, and about the same distance to the east of Gannet Rock. In 1876 the Dominion Government laced a spindle and a pall upon the rock. This is of some service 1D clear weather but of no use jn the fog. Jn thespring of 1877 the spindle was found to be bent, probably by some out ward bound vessel. side ©

We have before been compelled to call attention to the dastardly action; but the disregard shown for the indignation of the community only proves the utter want of principle of the offenders. Quite apart from the pain it must give rela- tives of the departed, who bestow loving caie upon the graves of their dead, the contempt- ible crime cannot but provoke universal sympathy for the relatives, and condemnation for the offende-s. This wanton depredation was committed at Mount Sherwood Cemetery; and we would call the attention of visitors there to the existence of such shameful sacrilege, and warn those guilty of it of the severe retribution their cowardly and cruel conduct must inevitably bring down upon themselves, even should they escape the hands of justice. The knowledge of the existing state of affairs must elicit from all the indignant regret we feel at making it known. Itis a disgrace toa civilized, much more to a Christian, community. s> -—
Aw interesting case connected with the law of marricd women’s property, was decided a few daysa_o in the English Court of Appeal, A Miss Farquharson, ou the eve of her marri- age to Mr. Hwfa ‘SV illiams, ordered a trousseau cesting several thousand dollars of a London milliner named Mercier. The modiste, being tired of dunning, at last sued the bride in her own name, apart from her husband, and seiz- ed her jewellery, Mrs Williams contended that the jewellery, which had been given to her by her friends and her husband, belonged in law to him, and could not, therefore, be saized to satisfy a claim against her. Lord Chief Justice Coleridge held that her conten- tion was sound, and a Court in banc was equally divided on the question whether his ruling was right. The case was taken to the Court of Appeal, and everyone had prepaired for an exciting and subtile discussion, when the Master of the Rolls raised a question overlooked by eminent counsel and gifted | judges in the two previous trials. ‘-\Vas there | any marriage settlement between Mr. and Mrs Williams?” asked Sir George Jessel. There had been one, and it was produced, and the discovery was made that it expressly convey- ed to the bride for her seperate use all the jewels of which she was then possessed, or might become possessed after her marriage. | Of course the milliner obtained judgement at | once under the Act of 1870. {
